News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

@Venardhi , help me out here for future posts. Try to make sure at whom your aiming terms like "half-educated dickhead". I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming you met yourself or a more generic target. One could take it as aiming it at @137th Gebirg .

Much appreciated.
Honestly, I hope he's referring to Alex Peters.

That would be very cool.

They have to be careful, though. Yes, this is a "sanctioned" TV show, but they're really stacking up the Trek talent on this thing, both in front of and behind the camera. I would think they may start needing to be a little careful - if this thing (unlikely) gets better numbers than Discovery and if it starts getting a little too..."Trek-y", CBS might just try to pull an Axanar on them, maybe asking them to throttle it back at first, and then...well...
You think that CBS isn't aware?

How "Trek-y" did Galaxy Quest get? Did CBS through a snit? No, because it was a parody. I mean, you've had "Trekkies" and Shatner's bit and the like, so CBS has endured it before.
Titanic in space?

Sure, but those were all feature films. This is the first series of its kind with ostensibly high-level production values that may rival that of Discovery. Plus, it's on network TV and not requiring some pay-per-play online video service. Orville could arguably reach a wider audience. Now, that audience is most likely Trek fans who will watch both, but I don't think anything like this has ever been tried in exactly this way. It will be interesting to see how it pans out.

The Orville isn't a full-on comedy or parody. The marketing is playing up that aspect of the show because of Family Guy, but Seth MacFarlane has been saying in interviews that the show will go deeper.

Seth MacFarlane said:
It probably has more in common with Star Trek than Futurama. It is an hour-long show so we have to tell a story…The show is being promoted leaning on the comedy – and we like the promo a lot – but I think people will be surprised that we are digging a little deeper. We are servicing the science fiction aspect as well.

Seth MacFarlane said:
The 90s was kind of a heyday for thoughtful sci-fi to me. Everything we were kind of fed was utopian and aspirational and now all we are getting is The Hunger Games. There is an attempt to infuse a lot of that into this show. And hopefully make it funny along the way.

Interesting - if they make this more of a "dramedy" instead of full-on comedy, this could conceivably move this away from the "it's just parody" argument.

I absolutely meant myself. I'll be more careful in the future with my self-deprecating humor though.

Am I the only one who got a laugh out of the idea of a MOD (any MOD in general, really) asking you to help clarify which user it was meant for, so you can help get yourself in trouble. We need to be able top plead the fifth here! :D

It will be, but these companies have been here before, to one degree or another. I don't think its as thin of a legal line as we outsiders think it is.

But, I could be wrong.

MODs are like parents.

Is there an emoji for that?

Maybe this:

Like Galaxy Quest, it's clearly meant to be a riff on Star Trek. And also like Galaxy Quest, it's meant to not be Star Trek. And face it, the elements that make up star trek have seeped into pop-culture enough that as long as you're explicit that it's meant to be different, it should be fine.

I hope so. Guess I'm just a worry wart when it comes to a potentially awesome show. I've had a lot of good shows get cancelled or just plain ended in recent years that I invested a lot of time in. If Orville winds up being as good as it looks, I just didn't want it to go away prematurely for that reason, is all.

Still wondering what happened to HBO's "The Brink". It was a fantastic show that was renewed quickly after S1 ended and then all of a sudden cancelled with no explanation at all aside from the ubiquitous "didn't align with HBO's business plan" boilerplate bullshit.

This show has made it almost all the way to air, so it's been in production for a while, and I have a feeling if CBS had a problem with it they probably would have stopped it by now.

The nice thing is, in this day and age someone is likely to pick it up.

I wouldn't worry about any legal issues. They don't seem to be using anything that hasn't been a standard Space Opera trope since the Pulp Era. It's all in the execution.
