Why is it more and more threads on this site resort to some form of American/American bashing?

Last time I checked this wasn't a political discussion board, this is a board about a fictional show.

More and more I come to this site to read other people's thoughts/opinions on the shows/movies and I just end up leaving with a bad taste in my mouth

Not seeing it, really.

Maybe you oughta skip Miscellaneous and read only the areas that have to do with the fictional show?

I never go to the Misc. Section, this is what I notice in the areas for the specific show. The most recent one was in a discussion on the MU

Well, what constitute "bashing"? I guess different people may have different definition of that.

This may be quite paradoxical given your lack of interest for that Section, but I think this discussion would be dealt better in Misc, or maybe even in TNZ.

I'm honestly not sure if it would be better in those sections. Like I said I don't normally read them. I posted here because I see it on the Trek Boards.

As far as what constitutes bashing; Someone, I don't remember who, and even if I did I wouldn't call them out made a reference to America having legalized slavery at one point in history, and how evil America for having condoned it. Clearly ignoring the point that America hasn't been the only country to condone and use slavery. Another reference was how America is basically war mongering and imperialistic.

If a person feels that way it's fine with me. But this really isn't the place for it.

I suppose the comment was prompted by a comparison, or some relevant example in Trek (the aforementioned Mirror Universe, for example). I find it difficult to think that someone here get on a rant against America "just because" (well, maybe in TNZ).

Given that Trek is awash in allegory and social commentary, I guess that real-life comparisons are unavoidable, and as such you are bound to find comments that you find objectionable. Obviously, they have to be on topic and be reigned in, before they make the place unpleasant for everybody. But that's not the case, in my opinion. Personally, I think the Mods make a good job about it.

Yea, I don't see much bashing on the bbs either, TNZ excepted. I have to say though, if you can't take the relatively calm conversations on this board, you might just wanna steer clear of the internets.

^^Well stated. The Moderators, for the most part, do an excellent job of making sure "bashing" in all forms is properly policed. I am American and I have not felt 'bashed' for it.

This thread is definitely out of topic. This is the General Trek Discussion thread, so what is "American bashing" doing here.

Put it in the American bashing forum where it belongs. lol

Don’t be so hard on Sibo191, everybody. He can’t help it. He’s American, and they get confused easily.

Yes, I’m American too, but... uhm, what was my point?

I too have felt, in my opinion, that quite a few threads here turn into some heated debates. I can't recall any anti US ones, but maybe I didn't see them. I don't go to TNZ much at all.

Some people say that it's the nature of the internet, but some boards I frequent that are not about sci-fi (weightlifting and military) are much more civil and there's more camaraderie on those.

I would say it's not as specific to the US as it is to a left-wing political agenda--and very often said agenda comes with the behavior you describe, because US policy does not conform to said agenda. Whether or not you agree with that agenda, this is a fact. I imagine Gene Roddenberry's political alignments have something to do with this, given that said views did influence the contents of the show.

I only saw the thread about Reg Barclay (The actor) being a Republican or something being tossed around in the TNG forums, but I never really looked into that thread, nor do I care to since I deal with enough politics in other forums I venture to, and I'm not from the US for it to even relate.

Can't honestly say I saw any "Bashing" of the US...... I've seen some topics relating to some of the messages Gene R. introduced into some of the shows in regards to what was going on in the US at the time...... and I saw some threads relating to the Federation vs. US Values/Capitalism..... but if I remember correctly, all of those threads (Including the episodes in question) were created by people who live in the US, so if those were in some way "bashing" the US, you have only your own fellow citizens to blame.

Besides, who really cares? Every country in the world gets crap thrown at them from time to time, mine included..... and I'm usually one of the first to point out flaws and issues I have within my own country/government.

If you expect us all to somehow kiss the US's arse anytime someone mentions the US, you might want to re-check your reality.
