That is why it was badly done. I've been part of a military family too, Dad in Army and husband in Navy. If there is swearing to be done it is done with every second word, lol. Not some stupid forced drop.

How funny: Because I’m a military brat. And my sister has (amongst many, many other things) the word ‘fucking’ tattooed on her back.
Meaning she planned it out ahead, lay still for hours to get it done, and has to turn around and take her shirt off for it to be communicated.
But yeah...one slip and an apology for swearing without permission whilst on duty (in front of a superior officer, no less) is ’forced.’
Also, you know what’s always really, really effortless and ‘natural?’ Television productions. Especially ones that require actors to say words like ‘Starfleet,’ and phrases like “To boldly go where no man has gone before!”

We've debated this endlessly before, but I still think the "fucking cool" moment was charming and refreshing. And let's not forget the context: it came after a rather massive dose of technobabble and exposition. That particular scene desperately need something to humanize it and bring it back to down to Earth. "Fucking cool" got the job done and provided a nice bonding moment for Tilly and Stamets as well.

While we were in High School a buddy of mine quit to join the Navy. He left a fairly polite, soft spoken fellow and after basic came back swearing every other word.
Oh yeah. If I wasn’t afraid of her seeing this and hitting me for it, I’d say she swears like a sailor.
Although she did officially get in trouble for her language back in the day. Not so much because she cussed, but because she said it in front of the wrong person at the wrong time.
Namely: Whilst she was in the process of being busted for not wearing the right uniform for that area.

Same thing happened to me after I moved to New York City.
When hubby was going away for eight months I was supposed to stay in Navy housing. Lovely people invited us for a meal to show us around and everything. She cooked an amazing roast dinner and I did appreciate it. But did she swear! The language was insane and I found out who was having it off with whoever - cheating on their partners. Like everyone was. It was depressing. Not fucking cool that's for sure.
Not overly realistic then is it to just force the scene in. Ticked the box though.
