Series 9 Set Reports Thread (SPOILERS)

Or it could be a warped alternate timeline (Moffat loves those )

The Doctor and Clara can not remember who they are and are placed into alternate lives.

Clara is a waitress

John Smith is a guitar player.

Away from Cardiff?

(I still wanted to see Fergeson interview Capaldi after becoming the Doctor.

Yeah, it's a shame we'll never see that. Although, to be honest, I'd be satisfied at this point seeing Capaldi get interviewed by James Corden. Actually, that itself would be pretty awesome.

I'm seeing some sites saying that the 12th Doctor might degenerate in one of the two parters and we'll see Doctor 10 and 8. Might this be the way to bring Mcgann back for a full series or special later?

I think that would be something. Imagine a doctor who actor coming back as a later regeneration

Outside of big finish we don't really know how Paul mcgann would be.

He could come back as the 13th doctor.

If tennant came back he'd have to do a complete 180 from ten's personality

Having the Doctor come back with Ten's face would put an interesting spin on something. River Song.

What if the face she normally ran with that wasn't the 11th Doctor was the 13th plus Doctor that had 10's face. Which is why she thought he was so young and somewhat surprised by him not knowing her. Maybe she figured that the earliest she's run into the Doctor that wouldn't know her would be 11, rather than 10. Being surprised by 10's face (he didn't have it all that long compared to the rest) because she thought that was a later Doctor she'd called until he didn't know her...and he identified the companion as Donna.

That whole scenario brings me back again to wishing that the original plan for Series 5 (which Moffat had planned for Tennant) had actually occurred. River already knew Ten's face, already knew of Donna, because she was supposed to have adventures with him in the future.

I guess they must have offscreen, in comics, something...but having Tennant stay on for Series 5 would've made the River thing make a lot more sense as it was portrayed in the Library episode.

There are so many great actors in the world that I don't think we need to return to the well, as for Tennant, much as I like the guy I'm not sure he's a good enough actor to play the part radically differently, besides which what would be the point?

Tennant and RTD were apparently recently spotted in Cardiff and this set tongues to wagging. However, it seems to have been non-Who related stuff that brought them there. I don't know if this was the source of what you read or something entirely different. Might it still be a little early in Capaldi's tenure to do something like that?

There was serious consideration to bringing back Patrick Troughton in the 1980s. But, of course, they went with McCoy instead.

Much as I think that McGann, Eccleston, Tennant and Smith were all too short-lived in the role (while simultaneously rejoicing in the fact that each one was replaced by someone even better, IMHO) and would like to see them play the Doctor again, I do have to reluctantly agree that it makes little sense to recast a previous Doctor as a new incarnation. As Starkers says, there are so many great actors out there who could make a great new Doctor. And it does kinda miss the point that the character is bigger than any individual actor. Once Hartnell could be replaced, and, possibly even more so, once Tom could, that cinched it.

The only way I could see them doing so would be if the show was doing poorly in the ratings. I could imagine an unimaginative executive insisting that the way to fix it would be to bring back David Tennant, who might be tempted back for a couple of seasons and a big paycheque.

Admittedly it would make just as much sense to cast a new big-name actor in the role and pay him the same big bucks, but some might well think that there'd be greater publicity and merit in casting an actor who was arguably the best-known face of modern DW, in the UK anyway (as I understand it, the show was bigger in the USA under Smith, but I'm subject to correction). They may also feel that the novelty factor would bring back viewers - the Doctor going 'Oh, this hasn't happened before, this is against the rules!' or the like. And DT is versatile enough to play the role entirely differently than Ten (though I suspect that he'd be brought back to reprise a winning formula).

The BBC clamped down on it pretty quickly but some idiot doing Work Experience at the studio decided to go on 4Chan and leak some photos and information last week. (It's all deleted now.)

The first bit was that the name of Maisie Williams character is Ashildr (old Norse meaning 'God of Battle') and the other that Episode 12 sees the Doctor exploring tombs under Gallifrey which are guarded by the "Ghosts" of Time Lords previous incarnations, which is where Tennant and McGann come in.

So unless they keep he name out of the Cast List we should know if the first bit is true by early October and if it is then that bumps up the credibility of the second.

Tennant did that right? He appeared as one incarnation and then directly after that in another identical incarnation! We just didn't know it at at the time. :p

There were of course rudimentary plans for Troughton to re-appear as the current Doctor after Colin Baker. Instead, McCoy appeared as a somewhat Troughton-esque Doctor.

That's never happening and will never happen. I guarantee outside of a multi-Doctor team-up we'll never see Paul McGann's Doctor on screen again.

Well I get the pro's and cons

Regeneration is supposed to be unexpected. How boring would it be to have tennant again?

From a show standpoint we learned from "Day of the doctor" that the doctor can revisit a few "favorite" faces

Yeah, we're definitely supposed to believe that they've had adventures off screen. Jim the Fish, for example.

The only thing that's kind of annoying is that clearly the majority of those adventures happened with Matt Smith, and it's hard to rectify her knowing all about future Doctors.

I would still love to see a return to the Library where the Doctor somehow frees her from her virtual life.

Why can you guarantee that?

As Moffat has said, "I know there's been loads of Doctors, but there’s only been one at a time." He wouldn't want to dilute his brand -- or risk the "main" Doctor proving less popular -- with a second active Doctor. (Which, come to think of it, is probably why he passed on Matt Smith's idea for a ten/eleven season.) Something like "The Night of the Doctor," as a web-only one-off, didn't run that risk, plus it had the benefit of ticking off something Moffat thought was important -- a regeneration. In short, I wouldn't expect Moffat to give any real consideration to reviving a past Doctor for a one-off or Doctor-lite episode.

He's probably right. The Beeb & Moffat wouldn't "look back" as it were. They might figure the audience would get confused.

I would love to see a separate series like "The Time War: Year 1", "Year 2", etc. They could do it while the main show isn't running.

They did separate shows with James May & Richard Hammond while Top Gear was between series', why not DW?
