Series 9 Set Reports Thread (SPOILERS)

If I'm not mistaken, the BBC's agreement with the Nation estate says that Daleks need to be seen in each "series" of Doctor Who.

I thought that was proven to be a myth.

For some reason, I thought that Moffat had denied that there was any such agreement. However, my Google searches for such a denial have been fruitless. :-/

I'd be very happy with a year (or two... or three...) without Daleks. Make the Daleks special again. :)

I was thinking/remembering someone here on the board quoting/citing the estate as saying that it wasn't the case. I'm not finding anything on Google at the moment.

Obviously the BBC paid to use the likeness, and the proposed post-1996 series had planned to use Spider Daleks due to not have the rights at that time.

Not quite: Terry Nation owns the Daleks full-stop, whatever the design; the pepperpot shape (and voice) is the BBC part.
Though I think they long ago agreed to merge-and-share as it was simpler than getting into prolonged court cases over which aspects had been created by Nation or BBC employees, and then trying to make whatever came out of it all on one side work.

^ I thought that was proven to be a myth.

One wonders though, if it is a myth, why do they still go out of their way to make sure the Daleks show up every year? Hell, even when there are no Dalek stories for a year, we still end up with Dalek cameos which don't serve a necessary purpose to the plot, like Waters of Mars or The Wedding of River Song.

It's possible that since the Daleks are iconic to the show, they would want them somewhere in a season.

In the end, this rumour is going to exist until we actually do go a season or a year of specials without one Dalek represented in any manner whatsoever. And at the rate things are going, I'll be surprised if that ever happens.

That'sthe thing, until we get a completely Dalek free series the rumour will persist.

And some more: https://penarthnews.wordpress.com/2...ming-in-cosmeston-mediaeval-village-tomorrow/

So from the sounds of it, it's a Mediaeval story but not Mediaeval Earth. So possibly going down the Norse Gods as Aliens route.(Hmm, where have I heard that bethor, sorry, before...)

Would explain this guy too.

A lot of the writers and directors grew up on Doctor Who. They all that their fright of the pepperpotted, exterminators. Nearly all of them have a Dalek story they want to make. So there are going to be Dalek episodes, a lot of them.

Series 9 has been confirmed as 12 episodes only and I predict that unlike last time there won't be one that's nearly double length. So if it's an even number will there be any one parters at all, I wonder?

I wonder if Worldwide will stitch the opening two-parter together for a theatrical screening.

But then, do you do the theatrical screening to coincide with the season premiere in August, or do you wait a week so that spoilers for the second half aren't out and about for a week?

And the unfortunate thing is that they just aren't scary. They barely seem like a threat anymore because they've shown up so often.

When Oswin erased their memories in "Asylum of the Daleks," I was really hoping that would stick for a while.

I suspect they'll opt instead to have the finale two-parter be the one that gets a theatrical screening. Easier to coordinate, have it the night of the finale, first fans get to enjoy part 1 on the big screen and then get treated to part 2.

Episodes 7 & 8 confirmed by Jemma Redgrave as another two parter. So it does look like it will be the full series that way.

And I take it we should assume that if Jemma Redgrave is talking about episodes 7 and 8 that they make up a UNIT story? Or at the very least, we know Kate Stewart's returning.

Although, wasn't it already revealed that she's in the premiere, or at least the opening two-parter? Does this mean we're getting two UNIT stories this year? Pretty cool if so.

^ Hard to imagine, but not impossible, that Kate and Unit wouldn't be back for the finale as well. Sounds like they're setting this up to be the season long arc, presumably centered around Missy.

If the season is comprised of all 2 parters, that's promising. The bigger problem in recent years has been rushed storytelling. If they can effectively fill 2 parts, this could be a welcome change. Of course, it puts more onus on the writers to come up with stories in which there is sufficient content to fill the air time without feeling padded.
