Series 6 : Set it 50 years after Encounter at Farpoint

That's what I wanna know. But maybe it's just another series set on the enterprise doing the same thing with the same old tech.

That's the million dollar question isn't it? Hopefully about something SUBSTANTIAL THAT EXPLORES THE HUMAN CONDITION rather than "kewl" explosions, space babes,
and fanwank.

That would eliminate half the episodes of TOS.

Series 6 should be set 50 years after TNG Episode 1, Encounter at Farpoint.

I've always thought this was the way to go.

Rick Berman was always against it because he said that Trek technology had gone "as far as it could ever go".

You could have the crew be visited from time to time by an aging Admiral Riker just to keep a connection to the past.

Or swing by Bajor sometime to see how the planet came along in the time after DS9.

I can imagine one crewmember saying to another

"My dad used to tell me of the good ole days when all Starfleet had to worry about was an occasional Borg cube or a Dominion invasion".

Why? What's been happening that's so bad?

Who knows?

We would come up with some backstory in the series creation process.

Well....there could be a visitation with the Jem Hadar that were able to recuperate & somehow affect the rest of the Quadrant due to no longer being addicted to Ketracel White. There's always the Androssi & other Syndicates. Exploited Borg nanoprobes somehow leveraged away from gullible child survivors of Unimatrix 001 "liberated" from Maturation Chambers. Let's see your ideas fleshed out in fan fiction at my site "Star Trek: New Worlds".

With all due respect, you need to know "what's been happening that's so bad," because bottom-line, setting is secondary to conflict and characterization. People pitch ideas by saying, "well, it's the 23rd century, so we can tell stories in the TOS era and maybe blah blah blah."

Put four characters in a room. They're talking. What are they talking about? Are they passionately discussing the topic at hand?

Describe them. Not appearance yet, outside of what's logically associated with ethnicity/species.

Go from there, then set in the year 2525 or 9999. Either will work, and the "when" will flow logically as the "who" are created.
