Series 5 - Set reports and spoilers thread

I don't think a smaller, more claustrophobic control room will work as well after the large spacious one of recent years. I've grown to like the larger room. If they can integrate the two style somehow, I'll be happy.
I like the bigger TARDIS console room as well, but I think if we have a small console room, we might see some of the other rooms in the TARDIS
I'm all for seeing more rooms inside the TARDIS. I can only hope the rumored episode is true.

Well if they did make the console room smaller that might make it easier to create other corridors etc than the current TARDIS' organic look.

I'm torn about how I'd like the console room to look. Roundels would be cool, but I like the large space of the current console room...then again I was surrpised how massive the Hartnell/ Troughton era conole room was at times!

I've been waiting for a "bottle" type complete in TARDIS episode and this sounds like I'm finally going to get my wish. I just hope that they make it completely cool and amazing, because I always figured the interior of the ship was actually infinite and you only ever saw a miniscule part of it, even in episodes like "The Invasion of Time".

Chris Bidmead described it (the TARDIS interior in the classic series) as "very large but finite" when he corrected Janet Fielding in the Logopolis commentary (who had herself assumed it was infinite).

That would be consistent with Castrovalva, where one-fourth of the TARDIS's mass is jettisoned, and it's a finite amount.

Same.

However, i do like the spacious look of the recent seasons and the TV Movie console room to boot. Its more open rather than a little crampt here and there.

I have mixed feelings of what i would like to see, obviously a blending of the who would constitute a total fan-gasm, but hey, until we see it and if the rumours of the change are true, we can guess and fanwank a few ideas.

I love the current design, but in terms of ergonomics most of the set is woefully underused. ALL of the action happens on the central pedestal and ramp, and only very rarely do we see anyone on the actual main floor of the room or up on the second level scaffold.

Whatever the new set looks like, I would like to see more of the console room to be actually USED. If rumours of a second level to the set are true, then I hope whatever's up there will be seen more than in just the backgorund!

BTW -

1. I really like the new '63 look of the TARDIS.
2. If the Moff decides on doing an updated version of the classic console room, all white, gleaming and spacious with the return of the large roundels et all then bugger "squee" to describe it, I'll simply cream in my f*cking pants.

I also really, really, really hope they return to having some kind of mysterious space between the internal doors and the external (police box) doors, as they did with the original series. Taking that away took away some of the mystery of the TARDIS to me... what was between the inside and the outside? How did that work? My dream as a kid was to get into that space and see what was there (as stupid as it sounds).

Oh, and bring back a proper "scanner", not just an LCD screen on the console.

And the big red Door lever and the small Scanner Switch. I knew where they were :)

I'll join you!

I agree on all counts!

Yes, including the last one.

See, this is probably my favorite thing about the new TARDIS. From early Hartnell episodes where you could see straight from the console room to the exterior, it's obvious they never intended this to exist; it was just too expensive to do otherwise. And it makes it way too obvious that it's two separate sets. The way you can see between them in the new series is awesome, and I can't fathom why we'd want to go back other than misplaced nostalgia.

I agree, watching classic serials now its one thing that does annoy me somewhat...although an airlock between the two might be quite a logical idea I guess!

I question why the Doctor needs such a big library (it reminds me of the one created for the Buffy Animated series) the show normally has a small cast, I think it undermines the Doctor if he is running back to the TARDIS every 5 minutes to look something up in a book.

meanwhile the Doctor would need to make sure that none of the books are made for the same trees as the books from THE Library.

He likes reading. Lots.
Plus, check out the novelisation of Terminus.
Nyssa asks the Doctor why he has a library of actual books rather than keeping it all in the computer. He tells her that when the computer fails, you can find a torch and read the book, so it's there when needed. Otherwise, it's a Catch 22 situation.
Nyssa says 'What's Catch 22?' The Doctor says, 'TARDIS library, 20th century literature, look under Heller.'.

im sure he does, but its not something we need to see him do alot of in an actual episode, there for we dont need a huge massive set to not show him doing it.

a redress of the console room like they did the Doctors Wardrobe would work quite well.
