A long time coming. He was also in that Airzone thingy of Briggs' back in the day, wasn't he?
Yes! And he gets to keep his accent, too.Alan Cumming will guest star in an episode.
Cumming himself confirmed the casting on the latest episode of Will Young and Christopher Sweeney’s LGBTQ podcast Homo Sapiens, as well as the fact that he’ll be playing King James I (who, confusingly, was also King James VI, of the then-separate Scottish throne)—the first monarch to take England’s throne after the end of the Tudor line with the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603. Skip ahead to around 15:55 if you want to hear for yourself, but here’s Cummings’ own description of his role:
"I’m about to go and do an episode of Doctor Who, I’m so excited. I’m a nice baddie, I’m James I, so I’m kind of like a dandy, foppy sort of coward who kind of comes alright in the end. And they said he might come back."
He’s living the high life.Yes! And he gets to keep his accent, too.![]()
Now that was a good show. He’s living the high life.
He's living it well. He’s living the high life.

Wait, I thought there was no time travel in the upcoming season? Or was the rumor of three versions of the 13th Doctor just a terrible rumor and we're getting a real Doctor Who series this year? Because I'm assuming that, whoever James I is, he didn't exist in modern day Earth or any time close to it.
Based on some photos and videos that have leaked from filming, it does seem that rumour wasn't accurate. Although, there is that "Multiple Failure" or whatever it was on the Console screen just before Jodie was thrown out of the TARDIS in Twice Upon a Time.Wait, I thought there was no time travel in the upcoming season? James I, as in King James Version of the Bible.
Honestly, I'd take multiple 13's (even though I hate the idea) as long as the TARDIS is still capable of time traveling.
I don‘t think there is anything to worry.
I thought Alan Cumming didn't want to do Doctor Who because it meant spending time in Cardiff?
Yes, I do realize he meant playing the Doctor and spending most of the year, for three years there. Please don't feel a compelling need to correct my joke.

And of course he is somehow both King James the I and the VI, because monarchies are weird![]()
It’s easy, he was the first James to be King in Scotland, but when he also took the English Throne, we had already had five King James’, so he was the sixth of England.
Other way round.
