Sequels/prequels

I was just wondering how many of the books and comics are sequels/prequels to episodes, movies, and earlier books that aren't part of the same ongoing story arc? I'm not just talking about ones that use a few elements of the previous story, more that deal in depth with the characters/races introduced, or the events of the previous story, like The Wrath of Kahn and Space Seed.

It's hard to find an issue of DC's first TOS series that isn't a followup to a TOS episode to a greater or lesser degree. Sometimes I think they went overboard taking advantage of the freedom to reference TOS that was denied to the previous Marvel series. Heck, the first story arc was a sequel to "Errand of Mercy" and "The Savage Curtain" and featured (a ridge-headed) Koloth. Then issue 6 brought back Ambassador Fox, issues 7-8 followed up on elements of "Where No Man Has Gone Before," then we got an 8-issue Mirror Universe saga...

Indeed, DC Comics did quite a few sequels to TOS episodes in their time. As well as the examples that Christopher noted, there was a two-parter which was a sequel to "Wolf in the Fold", a sequel to "Tomorrow is Yesterday" and a three-issue story which returned to the planet from "The Apple", a sequel to "The Tholian Web" in "Raise the Defiant!" and many more.

I know they might not be what you're looking for, but there was "The Peacekeeper" 2-parter which featured Gary Seven and Isis and introduced the Aegis, the return(s) of Harry Mudd as well as other characters such as Robert Fox, Finnegan, you name it.

On the novel front, I think there have been fewer prequels and sequels. Yesterday's Son and Time for Yesterday are sequels to "All Our Yesterdays", Double, Double is a sequel to "What Are Little Girls Made Of?", The Cry of the Onlies is a sequel to "Miri" and "Requiem for Methuselah", Firestorm is a sequel to "Elaan of Troyius", Assignment: Eternity is a sequel to "Assignment: Earth" and a prequel to Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, The Eugenics Wars were a prequel to "Space Seed" and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, One Small Step was a sequel to "That Which Survives", Garth of Izar was a sequel to "Whom Gods Destroy".

A bit of a list and some more direct than another. And this is only The Original Series! :alienblush:

... and issues 1-12 of the second DC Series contained an excellent story arc dealing with the threats the Klingon Ambassador made in STIV, based on events in ST III, with issue 11 revisiting many of Kirk's actions from TOS. A great read!

The only one not mentioned so far that pops right to mind is Foundations, Book 2, which was a direct sequel to "Return of the Archons".

Well, Devil in the Sky is arguably a sequel to "Devil in the Dark." And my Dominion War story, "Night of the Vulture," is sort of a sequel to "Day of the Dove" (as its title suggests).

And To Reign in Hell is either a sequel to "Space Seed" or a prequel to The Wrath of Khan, depending on how you look at it!
