I like the way you got the ships to appear beveled. I tried to create a similar effect, but it ended up looking really bad, so I opted for some simple shadow drops (which, against the gradient, I think worked well enough).

Leibniz and Newton yep that would be us lol. Didn't see your entry until Klaus bumped it back to the front page.

Embossing and a variety of layer blending options were used for those. The most difficult part though was making the two ships look the same...height, color, darks and highlights, etc.
