Bad editing also played a massive role in the production’s failure. It was clearly intended to be a series, and the end product was a hackneyed effort to scrunch it down into feature film length once the former intent was scrubbed. It probably contained raw footage from 2 or 3 different planned episodes. The whole thing really was an epic failure from start to finish. Such a waste of potential. The script is definitely ground zero of why the movie stinks. With direction a reasonably close second for me.
I agree that it seems like none of them really understand that a character like Emperor Georgiou isn’t really appealing as a main protagonist / heroine. I do think that it would have been possible to write something that might have made the character work, but this sure wasn’t it.Also, let's not forget that the Emperor Georgiou character is just a cardboard Snively Whiplash villain with no redeeming qualities whatsoever, who other characters inexplicably fawn over, who learned absolutely nothing in this movie about herself or why she is such a bad person, and instead the story tries to make her out to be the hero when she is nothing of the sort. I don't think Michelle Yeoh actually understands any of that because she's so caught up in her character's theatrics, and the writers and director (and Alex Kurtzman) definitely didn't understand that.
Depends on what you mean by “editing”. The decision that it would be a movie instead of a series was made before they started filming. So there certainly wasn’t any “editing down multiple episodes into one movie” going on. If you mean editing the script, then yes, it kinda felt like they had a vague outline for the first season and crammed all of the main plot points into the movie plot.Bad editing also played a massive role in the production’s failure. Is it flawed, imperfect? Sure! Fans were determined to dislike it months before, but It's not even close to the worst Trek ever.Maybe I missed someone bringing this up already, but I thought this Collider article from a few days ago was interesting. Yeoh acknowledges some of the flaws of the movie and its less than stellar reception. Here are the key parts …
Oh I definitely agree that a simple review of the relevant posts suggest bad faith, but it's obvious who that is.@Dukhat and @Quantum21, please give it a rest, will you? We don’t need people hurling niceties like “scampering off with your tail between your legs” at each other. And please let’s not repeat that spiel every other month.
@Quantum21, there’s celebrating a movie and being its champion online (and that is obviously fine). And then there’s whatever the hell you are doing. When you are singing this movie’s praises it often feels like part of the reason you’re doing it is to stick it to the folks who are critical of it. There’s people on here who enjoyed the movie or parts of it (I did, for example) and they are able to voice that without what I see as thinly veiled sneering. So please dial it back, and we can all be more peaceful with one another.
By that same token, though, @Dukhat: You really don’t have to jump on every damn chance you get to set the record straight regarding this movie. Especially when you seem to realize that the other side is making their case in what appears to be bad faith.
I certainly don’t think it is, personally. Not a million lightyears away from it, but I certainly find thinks to like in it; more than with other Trek productions. So I don’t consider it the worst. Is it flawed, imperfect? Sure! Fans were determined to dislike it months before, but It's not even close to the worst Trek ever.
Good for you. I let both you and Dukhat each comment on what I said once, but beyond that I’m gonna have to insist that it’s not to be discussed any further here. Anyone reach out via PM if they need clarification.Oh I definitely agree that a simple review of the relevant posts suggest bad faith, but it's obvious who that is.
The trailers looked like shit.Fans were determined to dislike it months before
A ringing endorsement!but It's not even close to the worst Trek ever.
I'm glad they didn't find some way to wrap gold around this turd in the form of an appealing trailer. I went in with trepidation watching it, and I wasn't wrong. I can't imagine I'm ever going to turn it back on and finish it.The trailers looked like shit.

If the episode aired at almost any earlier point in the season, it wouldn't have left near the same bad taste in everyone's mouths.TATV isn't actually that bad an episode. As a series finale, it's pure shit, but as a standalone episode viewed on its own merits as an episode and not as a finale, it's really not that bad. Granted, it's not that good either, but there are plenty of episodes out there that are much, much worse.
Agreed. On its own it may not have been the greatest episode, and the logic behind Trip's sacrifice would still be ridiculous, but it would just be another episode of Star Trek that didn't quite hit the mark to be added to the pile. However, as a series finale, it was an egregiously bad storytelling choice to do what they did.If the episode aired at almost any earlier point in the season, it wouldn't have left near the same bad taste in everyone's mouths.
