Yep, Carrier IQ are assholes, but I don't worry about my devices or computers having similar software, because I took my time to be fussy about what I run on them. Rarely it gives back when somebody pulls crap like that.
All of you Android users were clever enough to switch to CM right away, right? Then that's not a problem for you.
In any case, never buy anything from the carriers or in any way related to them. A simple solution to avoid such troubles. They are much more to blame than Carrier IQ which were simply selling them some software. And be more inquisitive and distrustful.

No, that can't be. I just heard that Carrier IQ-gate is best reason to buy an iPhone.

It's fast looking like CarrierIQ isn't really so much about the phone manufacturers as much as it is the carriers. Apple says that they "dropped" support for it with iOS5, which implies that it was on everything until recently. Verizon is claiming that none of their devices have it and HTC claims that they only include it on phones if it's required by the carrier (cough cough Sprint and AT&T) and they don't receive any of the data themselves.
So honestly, getting mad at Carrier IQ themselves is sort of missing the point. This is an effort by the carriers to get their hooks into your data and they're the ones who should get the blame.

Judging from the responses about HTC's relationship with CarrierIQ, whether the software was OEM or carrier mandated still sounds pretty murky to me.

Al Franken is usually pretty on the ball with tech privacy issues. I just wish he had hauled AT&T and Sprint in too.
I don't think the relationship is all that murky here... Verizon says that Carrier IQ is not on any of their phones. If this is indeed true and since Verizon sells HTC phones, then I think it's reasonable to assume that it's being put on handsets due to requests by the carriers.
