Secret software logging all your phone activities!

Oh (big) brother, where art thou?

Oh wait, you're on my phone.......and my computer.........and inside my head!

Like they said, get your tinfoil hats back out.

Yep, Carrier IQ are assholes, but I don't worry about my devices or computers having similar software, because I took my time to be fussy about what I run on them. Rarely it gives back when somebody pulls crap like that.

All of you Android users were clever enough to switch to CM right away, right? Then that's not a problem for you.

In any case, never buy anything from the carriers or in any way related to them. A simple solution to avoid such troubles. They are much more to blame than Carrier IQ which were simply selling them some software. And be more inquisitive and distrustful.

I've been using MikG for most of the past year so I'm all set.

A quick Google search for your custom ROM and "Carrier IQ" should yield results indicating if the ROM maker has removed that stuff.

Don't worry; that information is reserved for Batman's eyes only. See the end of The Dark Knight for more information.

It's fast looking like CarrierIQ isn't really so much about the phone manufacturers as much as it is the carriers. Apple says that they "dropped" support for it with iOS5, which implies that it was on everything until recently. Verizon is claiming that none of their devices have it and HTC claims that they only include it on phones if it's required by the carrier (cough cough Sprint and AT&T) and they don't receive any of the data themselves.

So honestly, getting mad at Carrier IQ themselves is sort of missing the point. This is an effort by the carriers to get their hooks into your data and they're the ones who should get the blame.

Judging from the responses about HTC's relationship with CarrierIQ, whether the software was OEM or carrier mandated still sounds pretty murky to me.

This whole mess already has a senator demanding answers. I'm surprised there's actually a senator doing his job.

US Sen. Al Franken today demanded answers from Carrier IQ about what kind of data its software for smartphones collects and how it is used and stored. Noting that Carrier IQ has been "accused of secretly logging location and private information of millions of smartphone users," Franken forwarded the company 11 questions, many of them with multiple parts, and asked for answers by Dec. 14.

Al Franken is usually pretty on the ball with tech privacy issues. I just wish he had hauled AT&T and Sprint in too.

I don't think the relationship is all that murky here... Verizon says that Carrier IQ is not on any of their phones. If this is indeed true and since Verizon sells HTC phones, then I think it's reasonable to assume that it's being put on handsets due to requests by the carriers.

Good thing I went with Verizon (and still have an original Motorola Droid).

For those out there not so lucky, TrevE has an app that will remove Ciq from most HTC phones, you have to root your phone first though.

Hate to tell you kids but when phones were only wired the phone company ALWAYS had logs of every call.

....nothing new.....

^But did they have logs of your every keystroke, your location, what apps you use, what websites you go to....
