Seatbelts

Should the Enterprise have seatbelts? Yes or no.

Real world answer: yes, and all of the chairs should be bolted to the floor, too.

Hollywood answer: no, it makes for great action scenes when the crew are being thrown around the bridge and the chairs are tipping over.

Weren't the new seats in TMP supposed to have some sort of seatbelt/lock or something? Or was that just Kirk's chair?

They appeared to at least have some sort of partial restraint in TMP. And Kirk did miss his old chair by the time of Star Trek V.

The trouble with restraints is that it gets harder to show just how much the ship is getting pounded by having the actors throw themselves across the room. The shaking during the wormhole worked, but they also did that in slow motion.

The next question has to be would they use them?

and he would enforce the regulation if you made it a regulation to wear one?

I'm sure all of us wear a seat belt when we get into a car.

Would a Starship would be more like ship at sea or an airliner? Both do not need to have you wear seatbelts in most situations, but there are times it is warranted.

The Enterprise sprouts seatbelts in the animated episode "Once Upon a Planet" and the movie Into Darkness, both times when gravity systems failed. I guess they're only allowed under that circumstance, and not when they're all being blown to hell by enemy fire.

Bizarre 23rd century insurance reasons, perhaps...

On Federation starships, not wearing seatbelts is a safety precaution, as it gives officers the chance to jump / be thrown clear from the ubiquitous Exploding Consoles of Death.

I'm sure all of us wear a seat belt when we get into a car.

Definitely! Ever since 1973 when my father and I hydroplaned and "T-boned" another car during a violent thunderstorm. I suspect that in another quantum reality my "center of mass" was elevated enough to throw me through the windshield and kill me rather than into the "floor well" as actually happened.

If I ride with someone else, I buckle up even if the driver takes offense. I explain, "You may be a great driver, but you can never fully anticipate the carelessness of another."

Sincerely,

Bill

They don't have them on school buses.

Maybe they would be too antiquated, if this is a starship that accelerates to many times the speed of light in a few moments and everyone isn't paste on the back wall, then maybe seatbelts would be like having Scotty go out front with a crank to start the engines. Maybe.

One would think they would learn the hard way, though: several times, the reaction time of the crew has suffered from them being thrown off their consoles, and sometimes there are injuries. Why not avoid those with seatbelts, even if certain other accidents tend to be fatal?

When TOS was made, I don't think most people wore seat belts in cars. I don't know if most cars came with seat belts.

The Excelsior had seatbelt for the transwarp thing...but I'm pretty sure the first thing Sulu made as master of this vessel was to kick out that shit.
