Season TWO OFFICIAL TNG Blu-Ray Discussion Thread

EDIT: Um, I really hope this is an unfinished shot.

http://www.startrek.com/uploads/assets/articles/BorgSlice.jpg

It is an unfinished shot. You can see the finished one at 00:29 of the trailer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUumOQRNmvw

Yeah, what you're seeing there of the saucer shot is the Full Camera Aperture, not the intended TV Transmitted Area (they actually used an even smaller area than that -- see below) which is a smaller subset of that image -- just as you see in the trailer. It was never meant to be seen that way, hence why the model makers never bothered to complete the signage beyond a certain point. :)

Assuming CBS goes with a 2/4/6 schedule for HTV, I'm glad that Darmok is in season 5. If HTV did it, I have a feeling the "phaser out of the torpedo tube" shot would have remained as-is.

From what one of the mods on Trekcore said, HTV may not be doing 4 and 6 afterall. That might have been a misunderstanding. All they could say right now is that CBS is doing Season 3 and that CBS's schedule remains flexible. I sincerely hope CBS handles the rest of the seasons. HTV has made an unholy mess of Season 2. Sorry if anyone disagrees, but it had to be pretty bad for me not to buy it.

As someone who remains hopeful that the outcome of HTV's work won't look all that bad in motion and who is still convinced that some of the released screencaps genuinely look amazing, I must admit that even I'm somewhat disappointed in the lack of love that went into recreating the FX for season two. I hope at some point someone will come forward and acknowledge what exactly went wrong.

However ...

... that's something I don't want to see changed actually, as I don't consider these kind of things "mistakes". I mean, really, where in the series is it said that there isn't a phaser emitter mounted on the photon topedo tube? It isn't a mistake just because the technical advisors of the show or a fictional Technical Manual say so. So again, I wouldn't want them to change that.

The shot in Darmok is one of the more notorious bloopers in TNG. CBS-D fixed the energy beam shot in the pilot. I'm sure they'll redo the one in Darmok too.

The energy beam from the pilot was just as ridiculous a "fix" as the one from "Darmok" would be. Sorry, I really don't see why those things must be "corrected". I mean, this is a fucking fictional spaceship. The energy/phaser beam can come from wherever it wants.

Since all visual effects such as phasers, torpedoes, and tractor beams have to be redone from scratch anyway, it takes just as much effort to make the beam come from the phaser bank or the captain's yacht. Why replicate a known error? The CBS-D team, judging by their results, were loving perfectionists, and they care where it comes from. Otherwise, who's to say the Enterprise can't go to warp in reverse? There's a "bible" for this sort of thing.

NewHorizon, How did you go from my original reply...

Nothing is yet known about Season 4. The schedules and assignments at CBS are totally fluid and subject to change. All I can tell you for certain is that CBS Digital will do (and are doing) Season 3.

to this:
One of the Mods over on Trekcore informed me that Seasons 4 and 6 are not assigned to anyone yet. CBS-Digitals schedule is flexible to some degree.

 A total misunderstanding of my original reply. Please don't misquote like that.

To break it down.
CBS Digital ARE doing Season 3.
CBS have not announced anything about Seasons 4-7.
CBS have not announced schedules, release dates or who is responsible for 4-7.

Startrek.com has an article about the second season release here: http://www.startrek.com/article/tng-blu-ray-producer-director-talks-season-two-part-1

It doesn't acknowledge any of the issues we've been focusing on here, but JESUS FUCKING CHRIST! Is that pre-viz/test shot of Nagellum?! It looks fucking terrifying!

EDIT: Um, I really hope this is an unfinished shot.

Ignoring the fact that it's missing the cutting/tractor beam (twice, the green from the main tractor and the yellow from the slice tractor), it also shows where the specially built close up model doesn't quite fill the screen as we can see it's just a floating piece of the saucer in nothing. Also, it's stupidly bright. AND it shows the cut off decals! It just says "prise" and "701-D".

It has to be a pre-viz/WIP right? But why is the smoke there? Oh god, please please please don't be a finished article. That's the money shot for the entire season ffs. It's got to just be a shot from the documentary showing off pre-vis. It's got to be. No one can be that incompetent.

Is this a joke? The article is about the special features. Roger has nothing to do with HTV or CBS Digital. He is part of the team who make special features for the sets. The shots are FROM the special features.

Well, like I said..."This might have been a misunderstanding" as in...on my part. Which, I clearly did misunderstand.

Sorry to have misconstrued your message.

It was (99.9%) a joke. Yes. But to be fair, there is no reference to the images anywhere in the text, they are not captioned and their file names leave no indication for where they are from. And only one question out of the five directly reference the VAM in a traditional sense, a second discusses the extended measure of a man.

It's obvious Nagilum is a test, but I never realised the smoke from the "Q, Who?" shot was in-camera. That threw me. It looks composited. :p

Calm down FrontierTrek, no need to get your panties in a twist. There's plenty of actual screw ups to moan about ;)

I know, it hurts. But just a quick reminder, how ossom the compositing of Season 1 was:

THIS is the benchmark.

It's horrible to think, we lost the complete Season 2 and wont get any of these beauty shots from it.

Thanks for posting that, Tom. It's a little dry technically (understandably so) but a great look at some more of the challenges they faced with this project.

Personally I prefer this kind of informational presentation, and enjoyed it better than the remastering doc from the bluray.

It's amazing after reading about the state-of-the-art fx back in the 90s how they talk about the technology from that time as if it were the dark ages. They've come a long way.

^ I'd hate to see what that shot would look like if HTV got their hands on it...

You likely will because HTV is slated to work on Season Four (unless something changes)... and "Remember Me" re-uses these shots. And because CBS Digital is giving them all the assets in raw, separate layers, they can re-envision the shots to their heart's content.

But if I were CBS I wouldn't let them near these shots... they should let editorial just drop in the shots as they are now.

I completely agree. This is great! Thanks for the link.

It's interesting that they note that CBS-D is working on "3 seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation."

There are some nice clips from season 3, but they mention a few times that CBS-D is only working on 3 seasons.
