Season SEVEN OFFICIAL TNG Blu-Ray Discussion Thread

I rate each episode of Trek 1 through 5 and this season is my fourth lowest ranked one in the franchise. The worst ranked in order from worst is TNG Season 1, Season 2 and DS9 - Season 1.

What do you think about Season 7 of TNG? Am I to harsh?

Whaaaat? TNG Season 2 and DS9 Season 1 are fantastic! (TNG Season 2 is one of my FAVOURITE Trek seasons). I certainly wouldn't rate TNG Season 1 as the worst season of Trek ever either.

Clearly, different strokes for different folks I guess!

I do agree with the majority though, that TNG Season 7 is on the whole very average.

It provides an easier reference for the looking at the episode guide if I'm not quite sure what episode or special feature I want to watch. By taking out the "pages of discs" I can quickly see anything from that chunk of the series.

I've taken a different tack. Since all seasons of the US issue came with slipcovers, the outer part of Blu-ray inserts are redundant. So I took those out and flipped them over. This puts the Episode Guide/listing on the outside of the Blu-ray case and are much easier to read.

My aging eyes had a tough time reading those episode lists through the blue plastic.

Harry

Nice idea! :techman: I wish I'd thought of doing that. I've thrown away all my cardboard slipcases, but if I'd considered this, then I'd definitely have done that instead. It's a pain trying to read the episode information on the inside of the blue ray cases.

Personally I think the whole idea of blue colored cases was flawed. PS3 games came in blu ray cases that are clear plastic. Much better. ;)

I think you misunderstood Harry's idea. He opens the blu-ray case, pulls out the paper insert, and reverses it. So, when you look at the insert through the outside of the case, instead of seeing the outer display (which is the same as the cardboard slipcase), you see the disc/episode contents.

It doesn't matter if you threw away your slipcases (well, except you should have recycled them at least ;)) unless you miss seeing the cover art.

It is a brilliant idea, Harry!

^ No no, I got the idea. I just thought it can be used in conjunction with the slipcases to have the best of both worlds. ;) Easily readable inside covers, while still maintaining the outer image (on the slipcase).

I've done this as well. Started doing that on the TOS blu-ray sets when they came out. (a bbs member suggested it)

The way these Trek slips have been done, expecting to read from the foggy blue plastic is asinine!

Seen the first couple of episodes and I'm really happy the show apparently used a different film stock to season 5/6. FAR less grainy. Season 7 looks more like season 3 or 4.
Very happy about that!

I don't think they used a different film stock for Season 7. While it's true Kodak introduced a new high speed stock (5298) in 1994, Season 7 began filming sometime in early July 1993, so they would've been using the same stock that they'd been using since the start of Season 3 (5296).

What you may be seeing is just more use of fill light on set (i.e. Jonathan West's style) and less reliance on push processing during development (which tends to increase granularity). :)

The special features have been great thus far, especially part of the 3-part season summation, with some really bluntly honest comments from Naren. I liked Mark Altman's comment about how fans should try and revisit episodes that hadn't previously been favorites, noting that even the mediocre episodes contain small treasures. Also, I watched AGT with the commentary and greatly enjoyed it, as I always do with Ron and Brannon's discussion. Interesting to learn about the "pilgrim" subplot which I had no idea existed beforehand.

Been looking at the Complete TNG Bluray boxset for a while now and finally caved today and it arrives tomorrow. Now I've just got to find someone to buy my Full Journey DVD set now

Make sure you keep or copy the bonus disc (the last disc of the set). It has some 20th anniversary bonus content that didn't get ported over to the blu-ray set. :)

Thanks. I would have really been annoyed if I'd sold it and found out afterwards. I'm a completist and like having everything with all the extras. Across DVD & Bluray I've got all of Star Trek, including TAS. I've also still got all of DS9 and Voyager and 60 episodes of TNG on VHS. I can't even give those away, not even a charity shop would take them!

Been really enjoying the last TNG blu ray season but I gotta say, I'm really disappointed that the commentary track for All Good Things was not included in the stock season release..

Heads up for GermanTBBS: Amazon.de just sent out their notification mail that the S1-7 Blu-ray box set is now available for preorder (releases on April 2nd in Germany).

They have two items listed (€135.99 and €199.99), they appear to be identical in terms of content so I guess one is a faulty listing?

Anyway, got my preorder in for the 135.99 one.

ETA: The €199.99 one is listed as Limited Edition (exclusive to Amazon.de) now.

Finally picked up season 7.. so glad to have the whole series on bluray now. And I like this season a lot actually.

Broke in my 4K TV with the "All Good Things..." standalone release last night. Absolutely stunning work by the CBS team bringing TNG into the HD world.

So I was watching the blu ray set last night, and got to the 10 minute special feature featuring the Okuda's home movie of the TNG sets and the soundstages at Paramount (narrated with a commentary by the Okuda's themselves). Absolutely loved it, and I just wanted to say a personal "thank you" to them both for allowing us all to see this home video. A perfect testament to these great sets and how they once stood at the Paramount lot. :techman:
