Pretty consistent in my opinion. Notice Mr. Rush does not appear to have used any diffusion filters or nets in front of or behind the lens on the bridge at least (there is no telltale sign of halation or "fog" around light sources). If diffusion *was* used, it would have been placed in a diffusion frame to soften the studio lights, if anything. Any further differences in softness can probably be chalked up to actors being slightly out of the plane of focus due to photographing with a larger aperture (lower f/number) or other lens idiosyncrasies (they used zooms, not primes).

As far as other sets depicting other environments, that's a whole other ball of wax... and we know Mr. Rush used diffusion filters to create particular looks. What we also know, is that he used the same Eastman EXR 5296 500T film stock for seasons three through five. We know this because Kodak didn't introduce another 500 ASA film between 1989 and 1994.

Wow, season 5 is a lot warmer. I prefer it to the "cool" white/bluish look of season 3.

I don't mind if each season has its own distinct look.

Also from Cause and Effect, the remastering of the explosion was a little "too" good.

Now when the breakaway model explodes, you can clearly see the bussard collector fly off to the right. You can see it painted brightly red and yellow, and it looks like it popped off an AMT model kit. I never noticed that in SD. Now I can't help but see it.

They would have been wise to paint it gray.

I'll have to check that out when I get up to that episode..lol So far the season looks great. The show looks a little darker and a little more muted this season, I guess they changed lighting, and film stock again this season.

The film stock they switched to in S3 would remain for the rest of the show. It's definitely the lighting style that subtly changed, less contrasty shadows and more even lighting, a real departure from what Brown did.

At least it confirms one thing for me, they used different carpeting by S5. That's what struck me when watching the third season because I didn't remember the carpet looking that bright, so it must have only been for a limited time before they went back to a warmer color.

Did they make changes to Engineering in season 5??? It looks subtly different. Also do we ever see where the corridor goes in the office section of engineering between the consoles in the alcove?

I don't recall noticing any differences in engineering in season 5, but the set was used for TUC between TNG seasons 4 and 5 and it's possible they altered it in some way.

If you're referring to what I think you are (the small corridor/opening in the Engineering office area), in the show, I believe it leads to the Chief Engineer's office, which has never been seen on screen. In reality, it leads nowhere except into the side of the curved corridor set, leaving no room to build anything.

The only Engineering change I can think of is in season 6. The turbolift next to the pool table was replaced with a Jeffries Tube access, notably seen in Starship Mine, Lessons and Quality of Life.

In reality, it leads nowhere except into the side of the curved corridor set, leaving no room to build anything.

Yeah, that is what I was referring to, I thought maybe in later seasons we saw a jefferies tube entrance or something like that.

Finally up to the inner light, I got to meet the writer last weekend at Austin Comic Con / Wizard Con. I got the comic version of his sequel to Inner Light, it is pretty interesting. The story was submitted to Trek but they never picked it up as a story to do.

Yes, this slightly soft appearance is certainly due to the way in which the show was shot. I'm screen-capping Season 5 right now, and comparing like-for-like Blu with DVD you can see the same differences in sharpness, albeit camouflaged in SD due to the limitations of the resolution.

CBS Digital tried wherever possible to get the best out of the material, but they are limited by the way in which it was shot 25 years ago. They were certainly surprised about some of the "questionable" filming techniques used when they saw the raw footage.

Thanks for explaining! And I have to say while I found the picture quality of "Darmok" a bit dissapointing when we were on the ship sets I have to say that "A Mater of Time" which I'm watching right now looks simple stunning. Sharp and great colors. Fanatastic.

Season 5 was a mixed bag of decent and great episodes. I would say most of the episodes were okay. Inner Light I think was the knocked it out of the park episode for this season. I really like Darmok as well. I am up to the special features on the blus. I am watching the feature on the music.

The music feature was interesting, no wonder the music sucked on TNG. These guys were trying to do something along the lines of the original series and create themes, for people, ships, etc. and the producers just killed it, and wanted musical background boring music.

Ron got some good themes in with Booby Trap, Tin Man, some of the more memorable scores.
