season 7 yay or nay?

More "yay" than "nay," although not as good as previous seasons. The great finale, All Good Things, as well as, IMHO, The Pegasus, Parallels, Lower Decks, Phantasms, and Masks, are real gems that stand out from the more pedestrian or terrible eps that season. -- RR

At least Genesis is entertaining. I can't say the same for Eye of the Beholder, Blood Lines or Interface. 'The family season'... ugh. Can hardly get through those nowadays.

Episodes I liked from season 7:

Descent part 2
Gambit part 1
Gambit part 2
Phantasms
Parallels
The Pegasus
Lower Decks
Thine Own Self
Journey's End

Preemtive Strike
All Good Things...

Hey, not bad.

Episodes I tolerate:

Liaisons
Inheritance
Homeward
Masks
Firstborn
Emergence

Loathsome episodes:

Interface
Dark Page
Attached
Force of Nature
Sub Rosa
Eye of the Beholder
Bloodlines

Ouch. That's pretty bad.

What was wrong with Attached? I liked that one. I agree on Dark Page though. Anything with Troi's mom is an automatic pass.

Yah. The finale is excellent and the rest of the season is good mix of very different plots.

It will never rival the sheer cheese fest that is season 1, so I think its a meh rather than a yay from me. That said just saw all good things, it is the best feature length episode in tv history imo. In fact its one of the best pieces of cultural entertainment and philosophy in the entire history of the human species, up there with shakespeare.

S7 is my favourite season of TNG. And it's only partly because of Crusher's hair.

I'm always pretty tolerant of plot holes and dei-ex-technobabble in TNG, because I think even most of the great episodes fall apart if you try to scrutinise them logically rather than as metaphors (or, for eps like QPid, pure shameless crack). What I love most in TNG is the characters and their interactions. For me, S7 was the perfect note for them to go out on because it's the season where the characters are most relaxed. Their sense of humour shots finally seemed to have kicked in full gear, and the camaraderie among the senior staff is at its best ever.

The only two episodes of the season I could actually say I don't like are Masks and Force of Nature. I find Spiner painful to watch when he's 'doing funny voices', and FoN is an ep that feels like that assignment you wrote the hour before you had to present it, while suffering the worst hangover ever, and not really having understood the brief.

I enjoy every single other episode in the season. I even love Sub Rosa - it's a fascinating episode if one can manage to watch the whole thing without having to run and hide in a cupboard out of sheer embarrassment for all involved.

TL;DR = Season 7: Yay!

I say "yay," too. Some of it was difficult to sit through at the time (e.g., Sub Rosa -- gotta disagree with you there, SiorX), but there were some good episodes and several perfectly respectable episodes, and anything that adds watchable episodes to the Trek canon is OK by me. I mean, I don't have to watch the episodes I don't like, right?

Season 7 is tepid at best, right from the mis-handling of Descent Pt 2. The last 8-10 episodes blur into one, with the exception of ALL GOOD THINGS which is awesome squared.

Sub Rosa totally rocks as well. I've no idea what they were smoking when I came up with that one, but :

"It just rolled in on us, sir"

is one of the greatest lines of the series. That said, its a largely forgettable year, with a couple of polished gems amongst the dirt.

Yay for me. Not the best season of TNG, but not the worst either. And from all Trek series, TNG had the best finale, IMO.

The Good:

Descent part 2
Gambit part 1
Gambit part 2
Interface
Phantasms
Force of Nature
Inheritance
Parallels
The Pegasus
Homeward
Lower Decks
Eye of the Beholder
Bloodlines
Firstborn
Emergence
Preemtive Strike
All Good Things...

The Bad:

Attached
Thine Own Self
Journey's End

& The Ugly

Liaisons
Dark Page
Sub Rosa
Masks

Nay.

Season 7 is my second least favorite season, ahead of only the first season. I loved Lower Decks, The Pegasus, and Parallels, but I cannot even begin to tell you what Interface, Inheritance, Phantasms, Firstborn, etc. are about. They left absolutely no impression. I'll bet they're rife with technobabble and psycobabble, though.

All Good Things... I find extremely over-hyped. I've watched it a few times and that's quite enough. Really, really cliche for a series-ender, btw. So lazy!

And I place Sub Rosa in the 'it's so bad it's good' category. One of Trek's best comedy episodes, intentional or not!

But how difficult it is to sit through is part of the appeal of Sub Rosa! :D A merely bad episode would just be boring or irritating. Sub Rosa is sublime - it makes you uncomfortable and you can have hour long conversations about what on earth the episode is trying to say/actually saying. Is it social commentary? Is it about romance literature? Were the writers all on some strange and exotic drug? Was it a practical joke played on Gates McFadden that got wildly out of hand?

It's a pseudo-incestuous bodice-ripper in space with bagpipes!

It's by far the Trek ep out of which I've gotten the most mileage in pub conversations.
