season 7 yay or nay?

john titor

Captain
Is it just me or was the final season of star trek somewhat underwhelming? I've been rewatching it and it just seems there are a lot of nonsensical episodes, eg american indians in space (this was good but it was still wtf!) , aztecs in space (the one where data suffers multiple personality syndrome),

sub rosa,

the troi episode where she relives a murder and the story is nicely resolved by weak technobabble which makes no sense,

the episode where an ensign gets sent off on a dangerous mission and you just know she aint coming back because theres only 15 minutes to go and its not a two parter, worf looks pensive at the end etc, they write themselves!

the one where worf encounters multiple versions of himself--now this was a good episode but its like the writers couldn't figure out how to resolve the story and instead used data to spout out yet more incomprehensible technobabble.

In general I agree, but Lower Decks is a real gem in an otherwise mediocre season.

There are some very good episodes, including the awesome finale, but there's also a lot of mediocrity, especially in the first half of the season.

Over all I'd have to give Season 7 a 'yay'. Granted, it did have three of the most cringe worthy eps in the series...Sub Rosa, Genesis(although a good sci-fi premise, just ugh) and Masks, but it also had a couple of my favorites as well. Lower Decks is in my over all Top 5. Gambit ranks right up there for me as well. Actually, looking back at the episode listing, with the exception of those three, I really liked season 7.

At least Genesis is entertaining. I can't say the same for Eye of the Beholder, Blood Lines or Interface. 'The family season'... ugh. Can hardly get through those nowadays.

Episodes I liked from season 7:

Descent part 2
Gambit part 1
Gambit part 2
Phantasms
Parallels
The Pegasus
Lower Decks
Thine Own Self
Journey's End

Preemtive Strike
All Good Things...

Hey, not bad.

Episodes I tolerate:

Liaisons
Inheritance
Homeward
Masks
Firstborn
Emergence

Loathsome episodes:

Interface
Dark Page
Attached
Force of Nature
Sub Rosa
Eye of the Beholder
Bloodlines

Ouch. That's pretty bad.

Well, when I was living through it I really wanted season 7 to stop, and was glad that they called it a day. I thought that the season was mediocre and anodyne. Looking back at it now, I feel that there are some really good episodes that I enjoy a great deal:

Gambit
Parallels
The Pegasus
Lower Decks.

By the way, John Titor, how's th future these days? ;)

A big, huge "nay". By that point they were well into the Berman and Bragga years, and it shows.

Back then Braga was only a co-producer, TNG was still helmed by Pillar and Taylor. The Bermaga years only started during season five of Voyager.

Season 7 was the year they ran out of steam. Pillar was doing DS9, Taylor seemed to be focused on getting ready for Voyager, Moore and Braga were writing Generations, so TNG didn't get the attention it needed. Many of the stories felt like they had been done before, too many plots had hastily written technobabble solutions, and I will never understand the reasoning behind Troi and Worf. :wtf:

There is only three 5 star episodes that year; The Pegasus, Lower Decks and All Good Things.

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I don't have a problem with any of those. And look at it this way, at least they got Insurrection right this time with Homeward. ;)

A big Yay. 10-4. Yes. Make it so. Engage.

I suspect I have a softspot for the seventh season: there are at least two episodes below (I put a * beside them) that I think many would (strongly) disagree with. Plus, I don't think many TNG fans would give this many 'A's' out to this season. Still, it's hard to not be amazed by episodes like 'Parallels,' 'Lower Decks,' and 'The Pegasus': these are just excellent episodes. [The episdoes below are listed in airdate order within each section]

A+
Parallels
Lower Decks
Genesis* (creativity and mood wins out here I'm afraid: just too much fun).

A
Liaisons
Gambit, Part I
Gambit, Part II
Phantasms
The Pegasus
Eye of the Beholder
Preemptive Strike

B
Descent, Part II
Interface
Attached
Force of Nature
Inheritance
Homeward
Thine Own Self
Masks
Journey’s End
Emergence

C
Dark Page
Sub Rosa
Firstborn
Bloodlines
All Good Things*

All Good Things - If there was ever a time to say 'Overrated' with regards to TNG, it's here. Given the epic nature of the piece, I find that it rings very, very hollow...and it's just flat. Given that's it's a sci-fi ep, I never found myself saying "Whoa - that's really cool," except for the idea of going back to the first season...but going into the future: I just don't get pulled in emotionally, and it was a letdown actually to see where they ended up. I'd have rather had all the far future in my own mind. And...Q. I like Q. Love him sometimes even. But him trying to teach Picard a lesson about the power of the human mind? Cheese! Doesn't he have better things to do...like rearrange his sock drawer?

Absolutely a 'nay'.

Only a few of the episodes were good, and there were far more nearly unwatchable ones than good.

nay. i think paramount was focusing more on ds9 and it showed!

Heh, if only.

It was Voyager and Generations.

(Hence the Native North American story, setting up the Maquis and Chakotay).

The focus was rarely on DS9, and Ira Behr (I think) preferred it that way, especially from a storytelling perspective.

I disagree with your rank of All Good Things, but that's okay. :) I enjoy Genesis, too. I know it's utter bunkum, but like you, I really enjoy the atmosphere of the episode. I think Gates did a marvellous job with that. I love the scene in 10 Forward with Worf and Troi, for instance.

I also really like Eye of the Beholder. I love start and the new set. I also like the Worf/Troi stuff in that, too.

Nay. TNG 7 was like TOS 3. Producers were concentrating on other things like Generations and Voyager just like Roddenberry had pulled back from TOS and looking towards other ideas to develop. Characters become caricatures moving through the plots. I still can't figure out the Troi/Worf romance either!! Overreliance on technobabble to solve problems ("Masks", "Emergence") similar to TOS ("That Which Survives," "The Tholian Web"). Some liked "All Good Things" as the climax but it was just another 2-parter for me like "The Gambit" or "Time's Arrow."

Yay,

Every one talks about the bad episodes but there were some great episodes, such as every episode that started with a P, the finale, Gambit, and for me, Dark Page. Yeah there were some not so great episodes, but I think there were more better ones than not so great ones.

Season 7 wasnt the strongest season but it had good stories and showed a bit that trek was going dark and TNG could go dark contiuning from season 6. IMO TNG could have gone on for a few more seasons if they go fresh writers there perhaps making Ron Moore incharge. Perhaps if Moore when to Voyager instead of DS9, VOY might be different. All Good Things, Dark Page, lower decks, Phastams, Parallels, The peagus and a few others kept the season up to par.

Overall? Nay.

For me, the seasons after Season 4 were mixed bags...some bright spots here and there -- but nothing to write home about.
