Season 6 Part 1 Blu-Ray set

I happened to be at Best Buy yesterday and saw that there was a Blu-Ray set for the first 7 episodes of the current season of Doctor Who. I haven't been able to see any of these episodes yet, so despite my best intentions, I splurged and bought the damn thing. I then had a marathon and watched every episode.

I was not a huge fan of last season, though I've grown to like it more as I've rewatched it. With that in mind, I have to say that I was blown away by the first half of Season 6. "A Good Man Goes to War" was fantastic, and I can see now why everybody loves Rory as much as they do.

While I am certainly interested to see where all the Amy/Rory/River stuff goes, the thing I am most interested in are The Silence. There's no way their story was resolved. There are still too many threads from those episodes dangling (hell, there are threads dangling from last season!).

Also, Doctor Who looks damn good on Blu-Ray. The production value seems to get better every year.

I've been tempted to get the first set just so I can see The Doctor's Wife on Blu-ray, but I'm holding out for the full-season set which is expected out before Christmas as that's supposed to have all the extra features plus it's assumed last year's Christmas special, the Comic Relief mini-episodes, etc. But one reason why they put the vanilla set out is to drum up interest from people who hadn't gotten into the show yet (or who don't get BBC America or Space Channel) and that seems to be working!

Interesting you should mention production value - for some reason people keep harping about budget cuts and the like. I honestly have seen no difference. If anything they've ramped things up and are still able to afford to shoot in places like Utah as opposed to greenscreening everything in Cardiff. We aren't quite back to the cardboard sets yet! ;)

Maybe it's just because I've never watched the show on Blu-Ray before, but I thought everything looked awesome.

I'm a long-time jaded viewer and DW looks incredible on Blu-ray. (I haven't seen the new episodes yet, but I bought Season 5 on BD and A Christmas Carol and they looked terrific). It's a shame the earlier seasons (1-4) haven't been made available in BD yet, but for the 2009 Specials Blu-ray box set they successfully up-converted the 2008 Christmas special, which was shot in standard definition, to HD and it looked fine so it's only a matter of time.

I have not seen any Who on Blu Ray yet. I have Torchwood season 2 and Children of Earth, though, and both look incredible on Blu.

Things filmed in standard definition can still impress on BR, though. I have Alien, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Apocalypse Now on BR and all look amazing.
