Season 2 Remastered DVDs CANCELLED

I doubt it's permanently on hold. Didn't the season 1 HD's sell really well, even given the high price?

I'm sure they'll try to iron out the production contract or something.

People who bought the season 1 sets can still get a good price for them on ebay if it really concerns them.

It's not like if you have an HD player it's suddenly crippled or something. There's no reason to swap out if you already have them, I think.

Not really new, but TVShowsOnDVD has posted a report on their website basically repeating the same article as in the OP, but with added speculation. It's an interesting read.

The real issue is that Toshiba was helping to pay for the remastering and creation of new effects. Without their funding, the project stops until they get another source. Plus there was something mentioned about recording for Blu-Ray. The second season is on hold until further notice, I would imagine.

why can't they release it on normal a DVD format for those of us who don't care about how many pixels there are on the screen?? or am I just getting old in my ways...

Season 1 is in a combo format. Part of this includes a standard def DVD version.

They'll probably release S2 on DVD in November or December.

A blu release probably won't happen till 2009 at the earliest.

They should've never went HD-DVD exclusive. But Paramount is a horribly run company that makes boneheaded decsions after boneheaded decisions.

Quite. Paramount even had a bunch of Blu-Ray discs planned - some of them even SHIPPED to retailers - then they yanked all support for the format at the last fucking minute.

Look - the bottom line is CBS knows the HD versions of TOS will sell (Season 1 did pretty well - although I didn't bite because I decided to go Blu-Ray wehn I bought my HD setup in December of 2006); so I think that eventually (read within one year or two), we'll see TOS Remastered available on Blu-Ray.

BUt - because (as part of the 'exclusive HD DVD' deal) Toshiba was the company paying 100% for the encoding and creation of the TOS Remastered HD DVD; of course Paramount would have to cancel and re-budget and get what's needed (duplication, distribution, etc.) to start making Blu-Ray DVDs in general (since they were basically relying on Toshiba for everything in that regard too, most likely); and TOS remastered Blu-Ray DVDs in particular.

It's a lot of money, and I sure they weren't expecting Toshiba to just totally drop HD-DVD, but Toshiba did, so any/all of these releases (and not just TOS Remastered) need to be re-budgeted and new agreements made to make them in the Blu-Ray format.

I have a feeling though; that by the time new JJ Abrams Star Trek film is starting to be premoted openly; we'll see the Blu-Ray versions of TOS Remastered hitting store shelves.

Hmmm... now, what does this mean for the CBS CGI Team?

Are they still forging ahead with their work? I believe there might be needed re-coding to make what is already completed for Blu-Ray, but what I'm wondering is - now that CBS-CGI has more time will the studio let them continue work and take advantage of this delay.

I know I'll have to wait a bit for that answer... but here's to hoping.

How many episodes are left to remaster? As I scroll through the list, it seems like nearly every one I can think of I've seen remastered; surely there aren't more than about 12-16 eps left?

With Blu-Ray now The Sure Thing, I doubt anyone interested in making money would balk at funding the remaining conversions - Paramount has shown with S.1 and all the other Trek extortions just how willing the fans are to pay darn near any price to own or re-own the series/seasons. It would be pretty difficult to lose money on the investment, IMHO (but not from me! :wtf: )

I don;t know if the folks in the article are confused, or it WAS the case that Toshiba was fronting the cost for the SFX remastering in general - but from the article, I assumed they were only paying for the creation, encoding and distribution of the actual HD-DVDs. If they were ALSO paying for the actual remastering of the broadcast episodes as well; that's a new/nasty wrinkle; but I agree that given the response so far, if that was the case, CBS I think would front the money to complete the remastering of whatever of the original 80 remain that need the remastering.

I'm pretty sure the "second season" of TOSR was to continue down thru the end of August '08, with occasional repeats, but pretty much all new until the last month or so.

Don't have the schedule on this computer, but it should still be there at trekmovie.com.

Edit:
I checked.

The only repeat listed between now and the last "new" one is in JULY. Except for that, between now and the showing of "Turnabout Intruder" (Aug. 2nd, '08) there aren't any more "repeats" listed.

What'll be really interesting is how CBS (the Paramount name having now been totally removed from the credit "slide" at the end of each episode) will handle all the stations they've contracted to play the episodes, if the remastering can't continue.

They already yanked ENTERPRISE from those very stations in favor of TOSR.

Season 2 will come out sooner or later. CBS/Paramount has too much money invested in Remastered TOS and the home video market to just not release an entire year or two of the tweaked and altered show.

By my count (from startrek.com) there are 23 new episodes yet to air. It is unknown how many are done, certainly the season 1 episodes are done, not sure about the rest. Anthony has said there will still be releasing them to syndication, the toshiba issue just effects there dvd distribution.
