I must disagree. Neelix was the only one who could be made to look like a Ferengi. besides that, it also fitted into his role as doing contributions for the ship and the crew.
Not to mention that the episode was meant to be a funny one. I thought it was an OK episode.
By the way, the name of the episode was "False Profits"

I'm a few episodes into Season 2 and Neelix seems to be improving in the sense that he is being written a bit more seriously. His annoying sense of humor in Season 1 was too broad, they seem to be reigning that in. Interestingly, I read that the first few episodes of Season 2 were actually from Season 1.
Loved "The 37s"
Neelix as the Ferengi was the one thing about that episode that *wasn't* terrible. Plus Ethan Phillips played a Ferengi before in Menage a Troi.
I agree that the series lost something in the later seasons that it had in seasons one an two, but season three was extremely dull, and some of the show's better individual episode writing happened in seasons 5 and 6.

I like those early episodes, so much promise.
Twisted and Elogium are bad episodes in my opinion. Projections is one of my favorite.
- Season 1 is ok, especially the first 10 episodes where they are still getting to know eachother, and the Delta Quadrant is still this dangerous new territory.
- Season 2 has its moments, although I don't really like the Kazon.
- S3 was the weakest for sure. There are several very VERY bad episodes in there and it has that awful tropical resort holoprogram.
- Season 4 and 5 are the strongest. Lots of quality episodes. Right up there with TNG Season 3 and 4.
- S6 and 7 are pretty average. There are some good ones (Workforce!!!!), but it's mostly filler. And I thought the holorights stuff was a stupid idea I couldn't take seriously.
