Scrutiny for Being a Fan

I thought that as I aged, so would those around me. It's sad to say that from my days of Kindergarten up to 3rd Grade, the kids seemed more accepting of who you were and what you liked. From 4th grade on up to my senior year of high school, nothing but constant slander and scrutiny. Why? Because I liked a show and franchise that was, not only entertaining, but usually had a deeper meaning to each story. I was a geek. But, I was damn proud of it.

My experiences are the exact opposite. I never was shy about liking Star Trek (but I didn't scream it from the rooftops either). I found out that a lot of people around me also like the series. Even now, i meet a lot of new people and most seem to like Star Trek or sci-fi.

I don't get hassled about being a fan, but when I do, I usually have a sense of humour about it. After all, it is only a tv show.

I can't say I've been scrutinized for being a Star Trek fan since I was a little kid, and Lord knows I was probably asking for it anyway.

In general people think I'm either hopelessly weird and obnoxious or enormously funny and at times surprisingly awesome. Sometimes it's a mix of all those things. It doesn't really have anything to do with the things I like.

I had this a little at school, but as I've gotten a bit older I've found that the people around me have grown as well and generally aren't really bothered whether I like Star Trek or not (although I do get the whole Star Wars questions getting thrown at me as well.....)

What I love though is when you find that someone you REALLY wouldn't expect to be into Trek actually likes it a lot....

Of course not!

........(you have a flag??)

Now if you declare your bedroom part of the United Federation of Planets

Then you are a loser since all the cool people declare their bedroom part of the Klingon Empire.

Yeah, I went there.

Hah!

There's another angle to it too-when some fans get really deep into emotional arguments over subjects no else outside of trek could possibly understand or care about.

"A quantum stasis field WON'T inhibit sub atomic fluctuations in a zero gravity environment and any idiot would know that, geesh"

I think that has given some Trekers a bad name or a weird one.

Still, Trek is a hobby that will keep you wanting more for a lifetime, gotta love it...

Besides everyone knows it the Star wars fans that are crazy...
