scorpion king? (2002)

It's mindless fun. It's very enjoyable as long as all you're looking for is a mindless sword-and-sorcery action flick. Plus, Kelly Hu is exquisite throughout. If it's on while i'm wokring in my workshop, I leave it on.

Yeah, it's just a stylish popcorn flick, nothing more. And deliberately kind of campy because it's part of the Mummy franchise.

I thought it was awful and regret spending money to see it on the big screen.

It's enjoyble fluff and Kelly Hu is just gorgeous to look at. I wouldn't have paid money to see it though as it's not that great. My brother got the DVD and we watched it together.

Ah, I love this movie. It's fun for trivia. Supposedly, it's the first ever prequel to a sequel to a remake. And there's a sequel, which itself is a prequel (Scorpion King 2) about the character as a youth.

Bernard Hill is in it, so it's got to be at least watchable. Unfortunately, since it's produced by the same people behind the WWE, far too many of the cast are "wrasslers" with all the acting experience that implies.

Ebert got it just right:
Did I enjoy this movie? Yeah, I did, although not quite enough to recommend it. Because it tries too hard to be hyper and not hard enough to be clever. It is what it is, though, and pretty good at it. Those who would dislike the movie are unlikely to attend it (does anybody go to see The Rock in "The Scorpion King" by accident?). For its target audience, looking for a few laughs, martial arts and stuff that blows up real good, it will be exactly what they expected. It has high energy, the action never stops, the dialogue knows it's funny, and The Rock has the authority to play the role and the fortitude to keep a straight face.

3/4 stars

An excellent review, this movie makes no claims to be anything but an action film. It's mindless popcorn munching fun.

I thought it was pretty good as a mindless popcorn flick. I was a little confused at first because he was supposed to be a good guy that we were supposed to be rooting for but according to The Mummy Returns, he's supposed to be a bad(?) guy but we didn't see his transition into a bad guy- as depicted in The Mummy Returns. I presume the events of the movie came before then?

^

Yeah, The Scorpion King is set before the events seen in The Mummy Returns. And I'm guessin' we don't see him go from good-ish guy to bad guy in The Scorpion King because they were probably hopin' for a new series of movies spun off from The Mummy.

Instead, they went with that craptacular Scorpion King 2.

If you thought the first Scorpion King was bad you should avoid the 2008 Direct to DVD prequel installment like the bubonic plague.
