SciFiEric's 2nd Pilot USS Enterprise

I know it's not done yet, but I really wanted to have some fun.

She needs to moooooooooove.

I would like to have done something more substantial today, but I have a BLISTERING headache.

I found something I have to correct. At the rear of the Engineering Hull during the first pilot, there are two rectangular windows with a round port BEHIND them, towards the shuttle bay. By the second pilot, that round port was in FRONT of the two rectangular windows.

I still have to work on the triangles under the saucer. After researching a bit, it doesn't seem like the "bumpers" were there yet. I guess that was just a Production detail.

I still need to add the lettering on the grey squares under the saucer section.

I think I will make the warp domes a little more deep red.

Of course, this is still very much a work-in-progress. Once I finish on cleaning up some of the details (like that round port aft Engineering) then I'll start on the textures. But that's going to have to wait until my head feels better.

Thank you for looking in.

All done in Blender 3D.

And I always did like that shot of the Enterprise coming over Delta Vega at the end of Where No Man Has Gone Before. This is a little closer and lighter, of course.

Very nice. But something about the lighting or the surfacing makes it look smaller than 11 feet. Hmmm.

And I love that Delta Vega shot too.
Thank you Tallguy! Yeah, I've got to work on the textures next. Hopefully that will help.

Very nicely done. The Big E looks as if she could be composited and dropped right into frame above Delta Vega. Beautiful!

Oh now you're just showing off. Some of these look like you composited those old production stills onto a black background. You've managed to get the camera angles, focal length, etc. spot-on. And I agree with @Tallguy, that Delta Vega shot is cool beans.
Thank you for the supreme compliment, my friend! You made me laugh out loud!

I really tried the best I could to find plans that come close to the proportions of The Big E.

I consider you and Tallguy to be the top purveyors of the original series representations of The Enterprise, so I consider compliments from the both of you as truly high praise. I thank you both, most sincerely.

That is one of the nicest things anyone has ever said about my work. Thank you, Lord Other!

That is just gorgeous. Also the quality of the model is really great, very sharp and crisp looking, really nice work.

Thank you, Santaman. That's very kind of you!
Hot Damn!
Thank you, Atolm! That's very nice of you!
Professor, have you joined the Blender side yet? I hear the next version will have a "Make art like Scifieric" button. It might even be in the beta release.
LOL! Yeah, it's called the Default Cube! LOL!

LOL

I actually started down the Cinema 4D path; OctaneRender s support for C4D is better than its Blender implementation. Then the world went a little sideways, Mister Professor Moriarty has his surgery, I had to put on my Nurse Chapel uniform for a couple of months, yada yada yada... long story short I’m holding off on doing anything drastic until I finish this project.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program. Make it moooooooove, @scifieric! (imagine a space cow mooing when you read that last sentence.)

Awesome work on the old girl, @scifieric.
Thank you, BillJ! You are very kind!

That made me LAAAAUUUGH! (The Space Cow, not the surgery ...) I hope Mister Professor Moriarty is doing better now!

Does look the part, and I know you want to get as close to what it looked like on TV but to see it with film grain etc is a tad strange compared to the other renders which were ultra sharp.. but as usual great work. :mallory:

One frame from one element of a test animation with my 2nd Pilot USS Enterprise. I'm moderately happy with how it is turning out. I may have to come up with a new method. I have a couple of ideas in mind.

All done in Blender 3D and Photoshop.

Quite fascinating how close you are able to match the look on the show. Awesome job, @scifieric!

Thank you, Santaman! I'm keeping my end goal in mind.

Boring story time! LOL!

I grew up on Star Trek. I watched from the time I was 3 years old when I watched with my Dad during the original broadcasts. Yes, I was watching Star Trek from 3-6 years of age. I absolutely LOVED it.

A lot of people don't get what Star Trek meant back then. It was movie-level special effects on a weekly television show! Color television was new, and these guys were running around in brightly colored costumes! It was FANTASTIC TO WATCH!

Anyway, I was also there when Star Wars first came out. And I went and watched the original Star Wars when it was re-released in theaters. Then I saw a show that covered some of the technical details around re-releasing the movie. They ALMOST WERE NOT ABLE TO RE-RELEASE STAR WARS! The original film had been kept so badly that it had started to deteriorate and get moldy. At least, that's what they said on this one television special. You would think that for such a technically innovative movie, they would have at least REFRIGERATED the film, but apparently not. They digitally scanned the film and did all the processing with computers. And it turned out great.

That started me thinking. I wondered what the state was of the original Star Trek episodes. I love Star Trek, but they used and reused the same effects over and over again, to the point where you could see the deterioration (scratches and such) on the effects shots. And I put two and two together. If the original film or negatives still existed, why not digitally composite them? It would look AMAZING! You could also eliminate many of the errors that existed due to photo-chemical processing!

But, I was about twenty or twenty one when I had that idea. So, since I was already working as an X-ray technologist, I realized I'd never get a job in Hollywood where I would be in a position to get my hands on the film. And my wife hates it when I build physical models in the apartment. I'm not about to fight with her. I actually found a woman who would marry me and I'm not letting her go. So, I started learning how to make models and images in 3D. I figured, maybe SOME day, I could get to the point where perhaps the average user wouldn't be able to see the difference between the original effects and my effects. I would then turn out a nice, fresh version of the show, but without the blue screen errors, stars drifting through ship hulls, and a black outline around the models.

Hence, my goal!

Thank you very much, Michael! That's very kind of you!
