"Using neutrinos, it would be possible to communicate between any two points on Earth without using satellites or cables," said Dan Stancil, professor of electrical and computer engineering at NC State and lead author of a paper describing the research. "Neutrino communication systems would be much more complicated than today's systems, but may have important strategic uses."

No, no...this is horrible news. This wrecks the launch industry. Outside of weathersats and milsats--Comsats are the real bread and butter of LV providers.

This is devastating.

This tech needs to be banned until such time as anti-gravity is produced--it will wreck spacelift. Had the microchip not been invented, launchers would have been larger for those manned AC Clarke com-stations. Spacelift would have been more robust, and manned spaceflight would be much farther along than it is now.

The microchip should have been invented on a moonbase and neutrino-comms developed only after a robust space architecture was much farther along.

Computers used to be roomsized--but for that reason considered important. Now, iphones are just ways for kids to show pictures of their junk and for teen girls to force one another into suicides by introducing the 24/7 news cycle and the paparazzi into already smothering teen peer pressure.

This is the worst thing that can happen. Once quantum crypto is had, it will be hack-proof, and the cyber-protest movement dies.

Now it may take some time for the neutrino signaling tech to be used, but there are other stressors to the LV industry

Near term--On page 28 of the March 19/26 2012 issue of Aviation Week and Space Technology, we see all electric communication satellites being fielded. This actually helps the manifest of existing launch vehicles (LVs) but the overall impact may be to diminish LV size.

Mid-Term--Airships and the increasing spread of fiber-optics to remote places in the world will also eat into the comsat industry. Competition with Space X and other firms will decrease already marginal profits for LV providers.

Long Term--Neutrino-Comm is the axe that cuts the head off comsats in general, leaving LVs for milstats (which also diminish as quantam crypto-encoded neutrinos are used--eliminating SIGINT. Drones imping upon other spysats, with space-radar and weathersats being what is left.

So, as you can see, the overall treand towards spaceflight is in a death spiral--with only Gov't funded space-based solar powersats and human space exploration as its only relief...

On the plus side, the FAA is heavily pushing a move from radar-based ATC to GPS-based ATC.

Technology builds on itself, so in a sense there is some logic to it, but ultimately it'll only be used when it's needed...some great ideas were postponed or lost in favor of other technologies, but the overall rate of progress is skyrocketing. While there may be limited demand for expensive rockets now, it doesnt have to be for the future, at some point we will need to go into space (even if its just another "space race" with other countries in the beginning), and then there will be all sorts of motivation to get the right sized LV.

As for the iphones etc, you're comments are a little bit one-sided and ridiculous, there are many reasons smartphones are changing the landscape of the world including dematerialization (what used to be material hardware or physical is now in the palm of your hand: compasses, medical diagnostics, flashlights, games, stereos, cameras, maps, encyclopedias, etc), demonitization and increasing wealth(adding 10 phones to per 100 people adds .6% to the GDP of a developing country...1% of GDP growth results in a 2% decrease in poverty..if there are 4 billion people in poverty that means 48 MILLION people graduate from poverty).

Waste is always a problem, but recycling technology can go a long way towards mitigating the problem if its implemented properly. Apparently prisons are a huge sources of electronic recycling labor. Future technologies may also help...ie: nanotech.

Lol... you don't need experts to tell you that recycling all trash would produce a self-sufficient system where already used resourced are continuously reused and new (fresh) resources would practically not have to be used at all (or their usage would be reduced to a minimum).

We had this technology for a long time - but the mentality of people and the system we live in takes long periods of time until it does things sensibly (sometimes, it never reaches that point because the pursuit of profit/money, especially if/when it benefits businesses is a priority - same applies to technological development - current state of it being sorely out of touch with where it could be).
But hey, people are eating up propaganda because they are conditioned to do so most of the time.
More often than not, people see things as 'impossible' until 'experts' tell them the opposite (and even then, the latter already knew numerous things were possible for quite some time) - and usually they see things through the problem of 'money' and 'value' (both of which practically ALWAYS cause problems), and not whether if we can solve a problem from a technological/resource/manpower point of view without bringing 'money' into the equation (but that's a problem of a capitalist system that is incapable of thinking outside of it's set parameters).
