Scientists in the UK claim to have teleported data between two quantum computers

Not sure, it may also have been a sloppy way of expressing myself. Perhaps I should have said
That's for sure, you mixed up your units.

I'd like transatlantic planes to be able to stay a MUCH longer distance in the air than just 852 feet.
You aren't crossing the Atlantic at 852' of travel.

Heck, you have lakes, ponds, & streams that are longer than that.

Anyway, I think the point, while correct, is moot. I am not writing a scientific paper here, expressed myself colloquially, and I assume people know what I meant.
Hopefully we can decipher your chicken scratch into something intelligble

Which is that it may still represent an important advance, even if it isn't nearly good enough yet for use. And I'll be curious to see how quickly incremental advances will come (or not).
It's a good first step, let's leave it at that.

It still has a ways to go before it's practical.

Ekranoplans would have solved that . Ground effect vehicles were cool just a shame they never "took off" haha....

But seriously how awesome it would be if they had become popular as transport

I can easily see them replacing the classic Ferry for short distance trips.

Especially for Island Hopping in the Pacific or Atlantic.

Could it just be hype?
The claims haven't been demolished, but until they have scaled up the concept to a large number of qubits, I wouldn't get excited. The qubits also require cooling to just above absolute zero, which becomes more difficult the more qubits there are. Here's a video from Sabine discussing the claims:

Isn’t there a phrase that describes how any gee-whiz Star Treknology that becomes real…will only work in microscopic chips—but never for us macroscopic types?

Seems like the Majorana 1 chip claims might be snake oil.
