I recently got netflix and it has all the stargaate, battlestar galactica and babylon 5 on it. I have never attemped to watch a scifi show beBSGfore and i dont want to spend my time on a stpid show. which one do think is the best? I liked the BSG first two episodes but i don't see it getting much better. And i don't know if their are other good shows i do not know about. Any help would be appreciated.

PS. And this is my 100th post

Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, Farscape, and Babylon 5 are all equally awesome in their own ways.

Why don't you tell us the type of shows you do like, so we can better judge your tastes?

But without knowing that, I would recommend "Firefly."

THe good thing is many sci-fi shows are on their instant streaming service.

I suggest Firefly, The X-files, and Futurama. Doctor Who is on there as well.

B5 is great, its just that the first season can be a task to sit through. it gets better, trust me.

From your avatar, can we infer that you've seen all of Star Trek? If not, TOS and DS9 are your first stops. Then: Farscape, B5, nuBSG, Firefly and Futurama. Branching out beyond space opera: The X-Files and Lost.

If you don't mind the esoteric and bizarre, try Twin Peaks and Carnivale.

THAT should keep you busy!

I'd agree with everything on that list except for possibly TOS. Depending on his/her age, that may be too old to really appeal to someone from a younger generation. I'm 40 and even I struggle to enjoy like 1/3 of the TOS episodes.

I'd also add Fringe as a show that's currently airing. It didn't start out very good, (not bad either, just sort of bland) but towards the end of Season 1 it got really good and we're well into Season 3 now.

As was previously said, it depends on what you are looking for.

Stargate SG-1 is similar to Star Trek in some regards, in that they are exploring new worlds and it focuses on some of the same ethical issues brought up in regards to meeting new civilizations. It is the most humorous of the shows you mentioned and with four main characters (five if you count Hammond, which I excluded simply because he doesn't go with them on missions and, as such, doesn't get the camera time the main four get), which allows for some good characterization and the interplay between the characters is really great. Like most shows its first season is not as strong as later seasons.

Babylon 5 is among my favorite TV shows because, while it starts out somewhat similar to Star Trek, it really hits its stride in the second and third seasons. As has been endlessly debated, it does have some similarities to Deep Space 9 if you liked that show, but it truly is its own show. If you like space-oriented sci-fi shows with arcs, then you might really like B5.

As far as Battlestar Galactica goes, as a fan of the show, I think it's fair to say that the mini-series and the first two episodes, proper, of the series are in a class by themselves. You're right in that it really doesn't get better (if you meant that you want a show that gets better as you go along), though I think there are many episodes throughout it's run that equal the mini, "33," and "Water," in terms of quality. The rest is good to great (with some exceptions).

As for shows others mentioned:

I'm not as huge a fan of firefly as some on here, but I did start re-watching it yesterday. It's definitely a good show and Whedon does amazing things with characterization. However if you are looking for something similar to Star Trek, this may not be the one for you. If you are interested in a unique take on sci-fi that avoids some of the tired sci-fi tropes and favors an interesting mix of a futuristic show and an Old West series/movie, give it a shot.

I'm a big fan of Doctor Who, but it's hard to describe. The first four seasons since the show came back in 2005 are available on Netflix, and hopefully the fifth season will be available soon. I was hooked by the first two episodes, "Rose" and "The End of the World," and if you like them, then it definitely does get better, especially in the episodes written by Stephen Moffat, who, as of the fifth season, took over as the showrunner.

I'd add seaQuest DSV. It's true that the first season is the best season, though I did like some of what they attempted in the second and later, third season, it almost becomes a different show each season. The first season is a good mix of the usual sci-fi tropes, though set in the nearer future than Star Trek. I think it's fair to say that if you enjoyed TNG, you'll enjoy at least the first season of seaQuest, if not the latter seasons, as well.

On a side note, we've been subscribers to Netflix since the summer and it's great. With the "Watch Instantly" feature and all of these shows available to you, I'd suggest just picking one and jumping right into it. If you don't find you like it, go try another show. That's the great thing, you are only limited by your free time and your taste in shows.

B5 is great, its just that the first season can be a task to sit through. it gets better, trust me.

I used to think the same, but time has tempered my patience for it (probably because now I know what's coming), but now I love the whole show. This one gets my vote too.

If you want to take the thread title literally, watch Andromeda. It's certainly a waste of time. ;)

i have a greater appreciation for certain season 1 episodes now, having watched the series a few times, but i'll skip more season 1 episodes than watch.

Babylon 5, Farscape and Battlestar Galactica are all great series. Firefly's also pretty fun, but I'm not familiar with Stargate.

If I had to suggest one, it would be Babylon 5. I've never found another sci-fi series that I enjoyed as much as that one. It's a show that starts out with mostly standalone episodes then becomes more and more serialised as it goes on. Unlike some people, I personally think the first season is perfectly acceptable - certainly on a par with the first seasons of most sci-fi series (BSG is an exception).

Lets see, i dislike DS9 but i did like the B5 pilot. I love TNG and TOS and Voy and like ENT. I would like to thank every one for their assistance. I am going to start Firefly and Continue with BSG. And start stargate SG1

If you disliked DS9 then you will probably not like Bab5 (very similar, though Bab5's arc is more epic) and you will almost assuredly not like nuBSG since nuBSG was headed and written up by one of the main writers from DS9.

I don't know about that: later DS9 may have some similarities to BSG, but early DS9 is much more like TNG. Ron Moore didn't come on board till Season 3 and Thompson and Weddle didn't show up till Season 4.

I will say, that if you liked the B5 pilot, that's a pretty good sign, as the series proper is significantly better. Anyway, have fun whatever you choose to watch.

I don't know. Since DS9 is on top of pretty much every Sci-Fi show for me, it's hard for me to recommend anything for someone who doesn't like it. Especially Babylon 5. I've just started the Second Season and it feels like DS9 on steroids, but without the likable and nuanced characters like Odo, Quark and Kira. At this point G'Kar, Londo, and Leneier are cartoon characters, Ivonova and Winters have less character development in a season than Data had in his first appearence (Ivonova is about as well thought out as Chekov was in TOS in the sense that she just talks about being Russian). The Doctor is relatively cardboard-esque. The only characters I can really latch onto right now are Sinclair, Girabaldi and Dellen. However, that being said, there is something about it I really like. I can't put my finger on it, but it has a really great quality to it. And even with so many things that are weak for me, I can tell that there is something special lying underneath. I look forward to finishing it.

I'd like to hijack this thread and ask for similar help. I'm looking for more SFF stuff to watch, and the well is starting to run a bit thin. Let me give you likes and dislikes, and perhaps someone could help me discover something new too.
