Science Channel refuses to dumb down science any further

Yeah, I read that earlier. Like many Onion articles, it was funny yet at the same time sadly a little too close to the mark and true.

Which is largely why I consider the staff at The Onion to be geniuses. To accomplish both is a rare feat

Hilarious. A co-worker was explaining the show Man Tracker to me a few weeks ago. He's very keen on anything related to outdoor activity, but I guess the look on my face made him change his tune when he stated, "Well, yeah, it's kind of a ridiculous premise, and it will be difficult to see how far the producers can take it."

Well, if they give a tracker a gun -- .

Oddly enough, this article appeared on the Discovery Communications' internal web portal yesterday. The company routinely posts articles and links to Discovery-related news and other industry news. Apparently, someone thought this was worthy of their attention. I thought it was hysterical, and extremely accurate, but I imagine there were a lot of angry Science Channel employees reading it.

Man, this is so true, and not just about Science Channel. History Channel is really the only educational channel I watch these days (except for NatGeo sometimes). Every time I look at Discovery Channel it has some crap about home improvement or motorcycles or something, and I don't even know what's on Learning Channel anymore. Even History Channel has a lot of marginal stuff; I love shows like Universe and Hidden Worlds, but what the hell is it with Axe Men, Ice Road Truckers and I'm A Lumberjack And I'm Okay? :wtf:

And the article gets it right in putting the blame on the audience. This is the kind of unmitigated, brain-numbing crap that people want to watch these days. We can't blame garbage on producers when their job is to produce what brings in ratings or big box office.

My "scientific theory" is that the Solar System is passing through a giant interstellar cloud of Stupid. It's the only way to explain everything from nuTrek to Dumb Science to leetspeak.

I think you might be on to something there.

We seem to go through stages of enlightenment and stupidification every so often....

pre-civilization (stupid), classical civ. (smart), dark age (stupid), renaissance (smart)....

Perhaps there is an "aether" which collects in pockets within the galaxy, and as we spin round, our solar system moves in and out of these pockets of aether.

When we're in a pocket, we're smart or dumb (who knows if they're "smart pockets" or "dumb pockets" [or "hot pockets", for that matter]), and then when we leave the pocket, we flip back to the other!

I think you may have something here....

I hope there are Lean Pockets, too; I could stand to lose ten or fifteen pounds.

While I enjoy "How It's Made", there isn't much on the Science channel anymore that has anything to do with science. At all. Same for the Hitlery Channel.
