Game Sci-Fi Game Fan?

Star Trek, one of my all-time favourite shows since I was a little kid and still love watching reruns today. I'm a big sci-fi fan and old school gamer. I played so many Sci-Fi games when I was younger, I still remember playing the original Elite. Starfox was a fantastic game, Tie fighter, X-Wing etc.. but there are just so many to count.

I started making a video game over a year ago with a friend of mine. It was originally supposed to be a 3D version of a Zaxxon style game but mainly with waves of enemies till death. No real purpose other than to get a high score.. that started to feel boring.

The more I developed the game the more I wanted a storyline because imo Sci-Fi just isn't great Sci-Fi without a storyline to help the audience stay interested and engaged. So the game had some serious scope creep after that realization and it evolved into something of a space-sim shooter with characters and a storyline! The best part of the entire process for me was developing the story and characters for the game, so much fun.

At this point, I've been seeking information on various aspects of Sci-Fi by reading through these forums and I asked a few questions as well. I was able to get fantastic feedback in the little time I've been here. It's mainly to help me iron out small technical details of the game and although I am a Sci-Fi fan I know there are superb experts (unlike myself) in this field I can reach out to here :)

I have a friend who is in the Navy, he recommended watching a lot of Star Trek again to get more familiar, he mentioned Star Trek was pretty close to the Navy in certain ways and so I figured I'd join a Star Trek forum to not only be around like-minded fans but to possibly be able to bounce ideas off Sci-Fi fans like myself. I honestly can't find a better forum of people than here (so much knowledge) so I hope you don't mind me posting some screenshots of what we have so far. A lot of the game isn't revealed on Social Media but just enough to show progress and not spoil any of the storyline.

I've seen at least 1 or 2 other posts here about people looking for game ideas so I thought "why not put it out there" and get some feedback and maybe if people were interested enough they might want to perhaps help playtest it. Since it's just two of us developing the game we can't do everything a AAA studio can do but we're trying to at least make a fun Sci-Fi video game for people like ourselves.

We both work full-time jobs so progress is slow from time to time however we continue to make progress weekly and as we keep doing that it gets more exciting to see our work come to life.

I just love Sci-Fi and Sci-Fi games. Let me know what you think. If you have any ideas you want to share about your favourite Sci-Fi games and what made them so enjoyable please let me know?

Actually, what is your favourite Sci-Fi game and what was it about the game specifically that you enjoyed most?

I'm mainly on Twitter since I can't do both, not enough time.

Thanks everyone!

..and one more thing. At the start of a new game, you can choose between a male and female protagonist. We're still looking for the female voice actor at this time but we have a few in mind. If you have an interest in doing some female voice acting and you have a way to record yourself.. please let me know, FYI, we don't have a large budget since we both have families and other financial obligations like most people but we try to set aside some funds for the game each month.

Look great! What 3D engine are you using?
I understand the importance of stories, but I think indie game needs unique gameplay mechanics more than story.

Hey thanks for the compliments Kana! We are using Unity, we have more "game mechanics" in the works, different ships, planetary and stratospheric missions. We were recently at EGLX in Toronto, people really enjoyed playing the game and we received a lot of feedback and ideas. So far it's been great :)
