Sci-Fi,...at it yet again...

Lost has always had at least a slight sci-fi bent, but it's definitely gotten more sci-fi-y (shut up, it's a word! :p) with each passing season. Skiffy airing it isn't as strange as Skiffy airing wrestling, or Braveheart.

And The Patriot takes place in the same alternate reality where William Wallace's descendant once again takes up arms against the tyrannical English?

I can't believe anyone would question wrestling on skiffy. I mean, the channel shows scifi and fantasy, right? As for Lost, OP-here's your chance to see why they are airing it!

Lost is plenty good science fiction.

Most likely it all comes down to some sort of black hole mangling the space-time continuum. The plot elements seem to map pretty well to some of the more out-there advanced physics theories. I've used websites about these theories to help me in discussions in the Lost forum, which is not something I've needed to do for any other TV show.

It's better at it than a lot of stuff on TV, such as BSG, which is putatively about "robots," but who act so completely like human beings (or perhaps some species of humanoid alien) that the "robot issues" that might arise never come into play. Their behavior seems far more influenced by being clones with a hive mind - which could just as easily be a characteristic of a naturally evolved species - than being "robots."

Or how about Heroes, which is just based on magical hand-waving about "genetic changes" that let people teleport or travel through time. What genes could possibly be involved in that?

Or those ENT reruns Skiffy likes to show - Star Trek is just technobabble and magical hand-waving. It can be good drama, but it's never been particularly good sci-fi - that's never been a priority.

And then there's all the stuff Skiffy airs that isn't sci-fi or fantasy in the least. Lost is a rare example of fairly legit sci-fi making it onto Skiffy, as legit as we ever see on TV, which means not very, but these things are all relative.

Actually the season 4 finale states the islands core is partly made of Quasi-Matter that allows a lot of the strange effects on the island to be possible. Even altering its own coordinates in 3/4D space when it managed to "jump" away. Its a form of matter thats had many theories thrown about, but its not quite a black hole. Unless it is a singularity that got snagged, formed a crust of Quasimatter as the Earth formed and eventually became the island as it accumulated normal matter around it?

What's ironic about Lost is that when it first started, people were coming up with all sorts of sci-fi explanations like aliens put the polar bears there and Walt summoned creatures from comic books and the like.

All that turned out to be fairly mundane. And then just when they've convinced us that there's nothing paranormal going on after all, Desmond starts time-flashing.

But yeah, Lost is probably the best show on TV at the moment. It's got a bit of competition, but not a lot.

Bitch about a show you have never seen. Watch the last new episode and tell me the show isn't sci-fi?

What pisses me off is that means ST:TNG is going bye-bye!!!

After spending a lot of time decrypting your post, I think I've figured out that you have come into this thread to gripe and make statements about a show that you "never got into" because it and other shows have been "(ad)ded" to death" whatever that means. I think I just confused myself.

Just was watching Stargate:Atlantis tonite and saw that Sci-Fi has picked up and is going to show LOST. Now WITF besides some sort of fantasy does this slowly declining show has to do w/ science fiction?!??!??! :wtf:

time travel, teleportation, psychic abilities, smoke monster, communication with dead people, disappearing island...

All this takes place on an deserted island w/ 40'ish survivors(+)? no wonder it never caught my eye.

No. I'd say the smart money is on your bad taste and complaining too much.

I'm still goin' with the theory that there's some funky asteroid buried in the core of the island that's either got magical mystery magnetic powers, is "sentient" in a Solaris-type way, or some combination of the two.

I'm going with the theory that the island is on the back of giant turtle flying through space. The people that have gotten off the island are only dreaming.
;)

Trust us, LOST is about as sci-fi as it gets.

Three words from one this season: "time-travelling bunnies."

Deserted? Not quite, but then I've said too much.

I could see that being a better explanation. If it came from space (oh god theres an old timey line) then yeah it could have originated anywhere at any time, funky deep space matter. The Smoke Monster could be a partially non-corporeal life form that piggy backed on it or brought it here.
