SCI-FI article about new Trek movie is online

Yea, that was a good article. There's a lot that's discussed around here commented on. Shatner, continuity, and perhaps even a spoiler regarding the general plot?

But perhaps not so much around here.

I liked what was said about Pine. I like the whole intuition, for lack of a better word, that these guys seem to have about "Star Trek" more and more.

Yeah, that article gives me great hope for this movie, and that they are treating Star Ttrek they way it should be.

I was pleased they referred to the characters as Shakespearian in a way. As well as pointing out great insight to Kirk's character.

As far as PR goes, they should just keep Roberto Orci talking. I find it hard to dislike the guy, even if there's none of his ouevre I'm keen about.

I agree. He seems smart and extremely well versed in Trek continuity. He's a fan, probably more than I am.

Oh, and for all those 'reboot/reimaging' arguments out there - It was he, I think, that said in the interview that this was a 'reimaging, not a reboot. There's a difference'. I can't help but like this guy.

Oh, way more than me, definitely. The guy has read Star Trek novels. I take my hat off: Orci is indeed the greater Trekkie nerd.

I dunno. There's still this whole Chris Pike as the original captain thing. I certainly hope that this is one of those misguided things conveyed by the interviewer and not by the writers of this film.
That bugs me a bit.

Didn't they refer to the "original captain" as in, from the TV show? The pilot. Subtle difference, but there.

The cancelation of Enterprise after three seasons? :vulcan:

Check out the first paragraph.

Actually, it says "after a stormy three seasons"... which is accurate if you think S4 wasn't 'stormy'. ;)

So they were casting Kirk's "wife" Carol at the time the article was written?

I noticed that as well. I wonder if it really means that Carol Marcus is married to Kirk, or if the writer got his details somewhat wrong.

Even so, it does lend credence to the rumor that Jennifer Morrison will be playing Carol Marcus in the film, which is fine by me.

To hear these guys talk about Trek, it reminds me of the kinds of things that Harve Bennett said about his experiences on ST II. That's a very good thing, IMHO.

No! There'll be no slack-cutting here!

;)

Still, in all seriousness, that's kind of a "big" screw-up for it being a featured article on Trek. It wasn't even a bit of minutiae. The Carol Marcus thing I can let slide. But getting the correct number of seasons right for a television show isn't very hard. Takes away some of the credibility that I, as a reader, lend a writer/magazine/etc.

Yeah, that's what I took him to mean. Orci never really restored to using in-universe terminology: He spoke of Star Trek's impact, its style of drama, its place in American culture. You know, hit all the notes which I like. ;)

Psuedo-debacle regarding Ent only running for the three seasons aside, it was an insightful article. Gave me a lot of respect for this film's brain trust. And Orci is great. It's good to know that one of "our people" is in there. :D

Fantastic interview.

One thing though: Love letter to the fans? Anyone think of anything else there? :D

Maybe that's what they're saying now, but watch.

In the closing credits, the poor actress's name will be next to "Blonde Lab Assistant". :)

 That line gave me a little pause, too.

Overall, though, very encouraging interview. Everything these guys say -- especially that Robert Orci -- is just perfect. It's great to see that they understand what they're doing almost in the same way (although, one would hope, to a much larger degree than) we do.
