Scanner question

I am looking for a new scanner and am a bit confused about the scanning element.
What i need to know is 6 lines color CCD better than 12 lines color CCD?
I am looking at the Canon 8800 and 9000 scanner and also the epson perfection v500. I cant really afford to go much above £200 and the epson v700 is over £400 which is somewhat out of my price range.
I do need the best that i can afford though so does anyone have any experience with any of these scanners?
They all seem to have very good reviews.
I will mostly be scanning old photos and some negatives and slides.

The only thing i know about scanners is that my printer has one built in. I scan everything at it's highest optical res 600x600 in 24bit color as a tiff file. I copy and compress from there if needed.
