scams

"Who are you? How did you get this number?? Do you work for the government??? I don't even have a computer!!"

Btw. twice within the last month my computer was infected with a really aggressive trojan (system tool 2011) that was a huge pain in the ass to deal with the first time, and claimed my computer was infected and tried to annoy me into giving them money or whatever, and I'm certain I caught it from two different sites; really strange, hasn't happened to me even once in the last decade before that. Is that just a coincidence or is that kind of stuff getting more common?

any one ever heard of a scam where some company phones you up and claims your PC's infected and tries to get you to put it on and they talk you through stuff?

Yes, I've had a call about that 2 or 3 times. It's really annoying. The most recent time I asked how they knew my PC had a virus and the guy asked me to put the PC on and he'd show me how he knew. I just hung on on him, like the other times.

It's getting a lot more common. I still get calls from panicked customers "I have 300 viruses on my computer!". It's a PITA to get rid of that stuff, too.

Aside from worrying that these scum might contact my 84-year-old mother and talk her into doing something stupid, is anyone besides me just plain tired of being bothered by these nitwits?

God, I miss the old days...when I could just report 'em to the cops and Nick Nolte and his three pals would put on their fedoras, climb into their big Cadillac convertible and take the pukes on a little trip to Mulholland Falls. :D

You had Nick Nolte at your beck and call? Damn, the best I could manage was Kirk Cameron.

They claimed to be from HP, they had heavy Indian accents while claiming to be in Dublin

Dubai??

If they ever ring me, I'm going to waste their time by pretending to be a bumbling idiot (which wont be hard for me). "Internet? do you mean that FurFire button?"[/QUOTE]

My mom always used to ask where her Mozzarella Foxfire button is... but then she decided she liked internet explorer better to play Farmville.

Yep. All 3 computers in my house were infected 18 months ago, and recently I had to have my laptop debugged again (as in, reset to factory specs) and, seeing as I hadn't gone on any websites apart from the regular few I usually peruse, I have no idea how it happened. Chances are my daughter's laptop is currently infected because it's acting up. The last time she kept getting messages that someone was trying to access her online banking accounts and that she must purchase a particular product to protect her accounts. My daughter is 13. :vulcan:
