Say, how did people here react to the roast of Shatner?

You guys realize these roasts are something people choose to do, right? It's not like they're held against their will and forced to listen to toupee jokes.

Oh yeah, and that's fine. But if I were agree to a roast, I would expect the people roasting me to actually be clever and funny.

It's not something I ever need to see again. But I'm kind of a base dick joke connoisseur so I found it pretty entertaining. It's not high art and it's not clever but it just gets so crass that it comes back around to being funny again.

I think the overall atmosphere, along with a certain expectation of being brutalized makes all the barbs and insults feel more like a rowdy party than a cruel hazing. You go in ready. And for the regulars, I imagine these things becomes even more fun and relaxed with time and experience. You get used to the culture and become a part of it. There also appears to be a bit of compassion and professionalism should a new roaster bomb as well as a feeling of "well done!" for the new ones who do a good job.

As for Shatner's roast, I did noticed that he put on a forced smile for the duration. A lot of people being roasted do. That and the occasional gesture or facial expression after a joke. Gotta do something to hold out for the hour-and-a-half I suppose. That's gotta be the tough part... being "on" the whole time. And doesn't Shatner have transplanted hair now?

The Friar's Club, in NYC, ( a club for showbiz types, especially comedians) were the original roasters, and they were great at it - legitimately clever and funny, yes, and cruel. It was considered a badge of honor to be selected to be roasted by them. The panel always consisted of people that legitimately knew or had some affiliation with the guest of honor. As pointed out, the roast has devolved into a showcase for b list comedians and potty humor.

Just seems like an opportunity to be rude to actors.

And what, I ask, is wrong with that?

It depends on who's doing it. If say, it were someone with a lot of respect and that the person being roasted admired, then the one being roasted would know it's being done tongue-in-cheek, knowing it's just a good ribbing. But then, say if you have some random guy who, like a few of these that always end up being at these comedy central roasts, and you don't particularly know him, but that he's just there for the sake of being there and trying to be funny for the camera while dissecting the roastee's life and accomplishents, then there's nothing inherently funny or right about it. The comedy central roasts come off as the latter, sad and pathetic attempts. If a random nobody were to try to dissect my life, I'd tell them to bugger off.

It was one of the most horrid pieces of crap that I have ever seen on TV. Instead of focusing on the people that actually knew Shatner, they focused on a bunch of no-name, unfunny comedians who only wanted to joke about how Takei had recently come out. Plus, Andy Dick. Need I say more?
I agree completely. The Dean Martin roasts were entertaining and humorous, but were not blatantly vulgar. Our family would watch it together in the living room.

I tuned in to watch the Shatner roast because of the Trek commercials. What I saw and heard was awful. I knew George Takei was involved, so I thought it would be good. Seeing him on the roast made me ashamed to be gay. It was gross without being funny. I have not watched another roast since.

I wonder if Americans actually do that at home (since I haven't seen anything like this in Franch/British/Spanish TV yet). Do you insult each other like that and think it's funny? Would you consider people who do that your friends?

"Fuck you and the horse you rode in on. Ah, let's hug." :wtf::rolleyes:

You realize that insult comedy is not relegated solely to the United States, right?

Did you read my post? I said that I haven't seen it yet here in my region. And we all know that humor varies from country to country. So it's not unreasonable to ask if this kind of humor is specific to the USA.

I insult my friends on a regular basis specifically because it's funny. And they do it to me. Most conversation with my roommate usually begin with a "Fuck you" or "I hate you" or a middle finger.

Yes, I read your post, and I gave you an answer, that no it's not specific to the USA.

This and...

I enjoyed it just because I enjoy seeing celebrities outside of film. I laughed a lot, though I can't stand Lisa Lampanelli or Andy Dick.

This.

There was a lot of potential in that roast and it was pretty much all wasted. The problem is in these roasts is they much of the time they focus on roasting the panel just as much, if not more, than the guy they're roasting. And, yeah, a bunch of D-List comedians doing the roast.

There was a lot of potential when it came to Shatner but was wasted on bucket loads of shit.

And I've no problem with mean, crass, or vulgar humor but at these roasts they like to use it over and over and over again to the point it's an hour full of dick and vagina jokes. Those can be funny, sure, but they have to be good dick and vagina jokes and a full hour of them is just too damn much. Be creative and come up with something funny! Something isn't funny just because you say "vagina" in it.

Yeah, i don't really care for or watch roasts to begin with. I only watched this one BECAUSE it was for Shatner. I didn't enjoy it.
