Say, how did people here react to the roast of Shatner?

I don't like roasts. I find the mean-spirited, juvenile humor tiresome and unfunny.
It was one of the most horrid pieces of crap that I have ever seen on TV. Instead of focusing on the people that actually knew Shatner, they focused on a bunch of no-name, unfunny comedians who only wanted to joke about how Takei had recently come out. Plus, Andy Dick. Need I say more?
When it happened? I wasn't interested and didn't watch. I've seen only a few clips from it since, and of those, Clint Howard's "Balok" sketch was the only thing I'd consider memorable.

Mean-spirited juvenile humor can be hilarious when it's good. The CC roasts, unfortunately, keep dragging up the same awful, tiresome and unfunny comedians which results in a stupid hour of TV that spent more time making cliched gay jokes about Sulu than the subject of the actual roast. Lisa Lampanelli, in particular, is horrible. I get it, you like black men with big schlongs. Fine. Move the hell on. What does that have to do with the subject at hand?
I'd be really pissed if I had paid for tickets to that show. Then again, the moment I saw Andy Dick on bill, I'd have cancelled the order. Not only is he not funny, but he killed Phil Hartman, who was.
Indeed, Dino's roasts were often inspired especially when Don Rickles got up to the Mike. I saw the Shatner roast and it was tedious. Don Rickles is my idea of roasting someone.Which reminds me... I miss Dean Martin

Yeah, I agree. I don't know when the concept of a roast started, but it's gotta hurt for the one receiving it, particularly when it's coming from someone you don't know very well, as there always seem to be some of the same people on these roasts used for the purposes of making shocking remarks that can't honestly know the people they're roasting all the time. Out of curiosity, one weekend out of boredom, I watched a string of these, including Hasselhoff's roast, and it came off feeling quite sad. Goodness, I feel sorry for the guy. They kept highlighting how little he's accomplished, and I know they were trying to be funny, but there's an element of truth there. I'd think you'd have to have a strong willingness to be put on the spotlight in order to bear the insults, not to mention be mentally stable. Would hate to see what would happen to Charlie Sheen during one. Just seems like an opportunity to be rude to actors.

I do miss the classic roasts. Foster Brooks, the most drunk (near) tee-totaler you'd ever want to meet.
Anyone who knows me knows I harbor a cruel sense of humour, and can enjoy a good ribbing. As Owain, said, these things just leave me felling sad. They're not all that funny -- they're pretty pathetic, in fact. It's nothing to do with being thin-skinned, it's a preference. Personally, I enjoy not being an asshole.
You guys realize these roasts are something people choose to do, right? It's not like they're held against their will and forced to listen to toupee jokes.
That's the point, they're not funny, and the assholishness doesn't come across as clever and good-natured, it comes of as douche-ey and dumb.
