saw Lawrence Of Arabia on the big screen.

Wow.

Yesterday I saw this movie in an actual theater. I found out about this private screening for a university film department and snuck in myself, and thus had one of the best cinema experiences in my life. Lawrence really needs to be seen on the big screen to be appreciated. all those shots in the dessert and the subtle details added so much to the experience.

Also of note, the musical soundtrack, which I never found particulary noteworthy minus the main theme, is amazing, possibly one of my favorites now.

anyway, the movie has risen even further in my estimation. a powerful experince indeed. way better than my viewing of Army of Darkness on the big screen last year:lol:

anyone else seen it in a theater proper? Hell, anyone here see it when in first came out?

I saw the restored version when it was released to theatres.

I liked it--not as much as you did, I think, but I still thought it was pretty good.

And I definitely agree--it has to be seen on the big screen to be truly appreciated.

Saw it in its re-release in 1989 in its full 70mm glory at the Orange Cinedome, which were these huge domed theaters with massive screens. That's how to appreciate that movie properly.

Sadly they tore the Cinedome down.

There's nothing like seeing a classic movie on the big screen. I actually saw Casablanca for the first time that way, at an independent theatre here that plays classic movies once a week.

Haven't sadly, biggest I've seen it is 720p on my cousins HDTV. That was great but I'd really like to see on the big screen.

I've managed to catch 2001: A Space Odyssey twice in the theatre and Blade Runner: The Final Cut three times. I've also been lucky enough to see the restored version of Touch of Evil, Citizen Kane, Full Metal Jacket, and a few others. Lawrence of Arabia is a glaring hole in the list of films I've seen projected; if I ever get the chance, I'll see it in a heartbeat (hopefully it's the restored version).

I saw it when it was re-released, and also saw in in film class years ago. This is definitely one that loses a lot of its power and glory when seen on a small screen.

I love this movie. It has a real grandeur and sense of place. Peter O'Toole was perfectly cast as the lead here.

You've never really had a movie experience until you've sat through a big 70mm Cinerama movie.

2001 was incredible in Cinerama (I went to the premier in '68 at a Cinerama theater).

That restored 70mm print was beautiful, and the sound was incredible. I saw it three times in a theater called the Regency, which had a huge wrap-around screen. Definitely the best moviegoing experience of my life. I was familiar with the movie, too, but wow, whole different level. That steamship in the desert image has never impacted me on the small screen as it did then.

Sadly, that was one of the last movies they showed there. But they had packed houses for Lawrence.

Another movie I didn't really appreciate till I saw it in a theater was another favorite, Chinatown. It has a lot more of a washed-out, depression era feel on the big screen.

Of interest, Maurice Jarre's score was thrown away when the studio a couple decades ago was trashing stuff to make room in the vaults. JArre was given notice to pick it up, but didn't get it until it was landfill waste. The studio didn't realize their mistake until it came DVD time and there were no score masters. Oops!

It's being re-recorded for CD next year.
