*sarcasm* I can't believe the flagship was full of cadets! *sarcasm*

That the Enterprise was full of cadets is one of the focuses of the anti-nuTrek folk's attack. I never understood this attack because there are clearly senior officers aboard. That aside, I watched Wrath of Khan last night and guess what! The Enterprise, flagship of the Federation, was full of cadets! In fact, Kirk tells Spock that he told Starfleet, "all we have is a boatload of children."

Looks like a ship full of cadets is not some outrageous thing, after all. In fact, it's the very same thing that happened in what many agree is the best ST film ever. :)

In that Star Trek film, it was planned and engineered to be used by cadets for training purposes, not an emergency 'spare of the moment' routine.

Re: *sarcasm* I can't believe the flagship was full of cadets! *sarcas

Actually, in TWOK the Enterprise wasn't supposed to be Starfleet's flagship. It was supposed to be an aging starship that was now being used as a cadet-training ship. Indeed, it wasn't until TNG that all Enterprises began being known as Starfleet's flagship. There's certainly nothing in TOS that even implies the Enterprise is the flagship.

So, it kind of irks me that they went ahead and called it the flagship in this movie. But, mind you I expected this kind of sloppiness from someone who gave a four-digit registry a leading zero.

Re: *sarcasm* I can't believe the flagship was full of cadets! *sarcas

Wasn't the Ent (B?) manned by a skeleton crew when summoned away from the press conference in GEN? And in STV, I think that the Ent (A) is summoned into duty while not yet ready from a mechanical standpoint. So I think this ship-not-really-ready thing has been done enough.

GASP! A four-digit registry number starting with zero!!! That's HORRIBLY BAD WRITING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

Re: *sarcasm* I can't believe the flagship was full of cadets! *sarcas

LOL!

This is too funny.

"The nuPrise is filled with cadets! Oh no! Teh nerv!" It was explained the rest of the fleet was engaged on the Klingon border.

Yet nobody has a problem with TWOK, when Kirk goes to Spock claiming they have to go the Regula I because "They're the only ship in the quadrant"? And no explanation how that MacGuffin happened. How convenient!

Or Wormhole is still having us on. One of those.

Re: *sarcasm* I can't believe the flagship was full of cadets! *sarcas

There is definitely a precedent for it, but at least it'll never have to happen again, hopefully, now that the crew is all together.

Although I always thought the Enterprise was the flagship. Did that really only first get mentioned in TNG?

Most of the complaints about the New Trek center on things that were overlooked in the old shows and movies.

Yes, TOS Enteprise was just one ship in the fleet. It was important to Roddenberry that this ship was not really any different than any other. And, that it had age. Of course, it was a ship that distinguished itself under Captain Kirk. Ageing was a big theme in the movies, and having the Enterprise age with the characters was a stroke of genius.

But this movie is a fresh new start. Why can't the Enteprise be the flagship and brand new?

As far as it being filled with cadets goes, my feeling is they were on a rescue/aid mission. They certainly didn't believe they were going to see combat.

Sorry, but what`s wrong with that?

The reason the Kelvin has a zero as the leading digit is because Capt. Robau is a badass and said he would only be captain of the Kelvin if the first digit is 0. There I solved it.

Re: *sarcasm* I can't believe the flagship was full of cadets! *sarcas

In a way, it does make a bit of sense. For emergency staffing, the largest pools of available personnel are going to be in your training commands.

It's his thing. Like xortex, who proclaimed in advance that the entire movie would be ruined if Gary Mitchell wasn't in it. Or TheMasterOfOrion taking every opportunity on this board to rip Battlestar Galactica and/or spoil it for those who haven't seen it. Or a couple posters in Misc. who are big into incest.

Re: *sarcasm* I can't believe the flagship was full of cadets! *sarcas

The Kelvin has a leading zero for the same reason the faux USS Dauntless NX-01-A and the Enterprise NX-01 had leading zeroes.

Re: *sarcasm* I can't believe the flagship was full of cadets! *sarcas

How exactly do we know the ship was full of cadets?

Sulu is a lieutenant.
Uhura is a lieutenant.
Chekov is an ensign.

Mind you Pike also calls Uhura a cadet, so who knows.

Anyway half the ship could be full of cadets, we don't know it's 100% full.

I'm pretty sure you can be promoted within the academy, as Uhura came out of the academy as a lietenant and not a cadet/ensign.

And as for Sulu and Chekov, I never saw any indication that they came from the academy. Pike and Spock were both instructors in the academy, I can only presume Spocks storyline is he served under Pike at the academy instead of the Enterprise. And the only two of the main crew we know were at the academy along with Kirk was Uhura.

Re: *sarcasm* I can't believe the flagship was full of cadets! *sarcas

The new movie is a beautiful film to watch and it is a whole lot of fun to watch. I thought the NuKirk and NuSpock did a great job. I have no problem with the differences from Prime Universe canon caused by the different events in the alternate timeline. However, the idea of Kirk in the end being given command of his own ship (let alone the flagship) right out of the academy after only one mission seemed just a bit silly to me (Major Mary Sue Moment):vulcan:. There is a big difference in rising quickly through the ranks and just jumping all the ranks to captain. Moreover, in the Wrath of Khan the cadets onboard were NOT given command of the vessel.

Warmest Wishes,
Whoa Nellie
