Sanctuary did a ****** Epiosde.(Spoilers)

Guy Gardener

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
An abnormal monster, who can only communicate through song.

Song and violence.

But song.

Madness.

Highly entetaining though.

Yeah, that was definitely one of the strangest things I've ever seen on that show... but I think the strangest part is that I actually really enjoyed it. I'm a huge musical fan, and I thought they actually did a pretty good job with it.
Although I would have been curious to see if they would have come up with anything if Biggie was in the episode.
Was the lack of Christopher Heyerdahl in the last couple of episodes due to him playing The Swede on Hell on Wheels? I was surprised to see him on that when he already had two roles on Sanctuary.

"Once More with Feeling" was far from the first musical episode in a TV show. As for whether it was better, I'd disagree, but I'm biased due to my dislike of Buffy in general.

Buffy did it first and it was way better.

Ummm... better, possibly. First. Not a chance.

Ally McBeal did it a year before / Xena: Warrior Princess did TWO episodes before Joss learnt how to play the piano / Lexx and Daria in 1999/... a couple of Drew Carey Show episodes probably qualify... and other than the slew of episodes of random TV shows that had a stab you had Cop Rock, which was a musical SHOW (brain soap please)... and why not go all the way back to the seminal genius of "What's Opera, Doc" with good old Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd. STILL some of the finest 7 minutes ever to hit the airwaves...

Joss did it well, but he wasn't the first and it wasn't his last ;)

Hugo - He got... the mustard... OOUUUUUTTT!!

What I liked about Sanctuary was that this was reality, there was no obfuscation or fantasy or aside like with Greys Anatomy last year, but they knew they were being ridiculous and proceeded anyways.

Poor Will. So bashful he almost proved he didn't love Abby enough to belt one out.

I liked it. I usually like it when they do some crazy ass thing like that. Like the Bollywood episode-- that was great. :D

The scene with the other Sanctuary directors was a bit perplexing. At first I thought they were all infected. Then I thought Magnus was losing it from communicating in song so long-- except she hadn't been doing it that much. In any case, it made me wish they went all out like Buffy did-- I really loved "Once More, With Feeling."

I think Magnus's dad had the best song; that was really nice.

I don't think there were enough songs. Otherwise, it was an okay episode. It's certainly not on par with Doctor Horrible's Sing-along-blog, but few musicals can reach that level of awesomeness. ;)

What was it with the guy form little mosque on the prairie just squeeing "I love Money!"

That whole scene was weird if Magnus wasn't infected.

Which she wasn't.

Yeah, the scene with Magnus singing to the council made zero sense in the context of the episode.

Yeah, I'm not sure exactly what was up with that scene.
As for comparing it to "One More, With Feeling", while I think OM,WF was a better musical, I actually like the story behind this better.

Watched it yesterday, I thought they did a fantastic job with it. New (or at least rarely used) concept of a creature that needs to be communicated to in song. Will's reluctance, and his fight with Helen, and so on.

Abby and Magnus' dad are really good singers (And Magnus isn't bad herself).

I found myself liking Abby much more in this episode, and really got scared for her when she was up on the roof.

Wow, took a gander at the SyFy BBS for Sanctuary, and it seems almost all of the posts in the thread for the episode are trashing it. This episode was apparently universally hated (By the BBS posting fans), and spawned boatloads of "new Users" to register so they could trash the episode.

Now, I know there are trolls who do it for kicks, and create a bunch of new user names to make it appear there is alot of hatred (There was some very prolific trolls like this on the LOST ABC Board), but, even msot of the posters with lots of posts under their belt were complaining about it? I don't get it, I enjoyed the episode immensely?

Well, I'll go see if my membership is still active and if so provide a dose of reason. :rommie:

If the SyFy boards don't like something the odds of it being good increase enormously.

Trekbbs isn't perfect, but it is light-years beyond the SyFy boards in terms of discussion and the general ability of most posters here to articulate an argument or opinion without it becoming a flame war.

They didn't actually sing in the board of directors scene, not even Magnus, who at most did a patter song. Magnus was tired and had been exercising her brain to think in song and the directors coincidentally feed into it. A remarkable but very entertaining coincidence. Strictly speaking the really absurd scene was Gregory showing up but he sang much too well to cavil at logic. Which as we all know Sanctuary (like its spiritual predecessor Farscape) loves to sneer at.

Comparison to Buffy are pointless. The story was entertaining. Abby's suicide scene was very strong and the escape logical. Robin Dunne obviously can't sing any where near as well as he can dance but they cleverly worked that in as a character development.

As to why this episode was unpopular, humor is very subjective. If it wasn't for the popularity of humorous SF shows like Eureka and Warehouse 13, I'd say that SF fans don't have a sense of humor at all. There are cases on this bbs where you can literally say that a show like No Ordinary Family or SG1 are basically comedies who find the concept so alien they can't even grasp the concept!:guffaw:On the plus side for those folks, not getting comedy must help stay so solemn while watching some of the more pompous SF shows.

I like this. ^

:techman:

And I liked this weird and wild episode. Sanctuary has, at times, shown flashes of genius. This was ...intriguing.

(But I liked the Grey's Anatomy better...)

What did y'all think of the music quality? My boss' brother-in-law is the composer and I think he'd like to hear some feedback. I don't watch the show myself so can't give it directly.

I've really liked most of the music in Sanctuary since it started, and this episode was no exception.
