I have a nook and I love it, But I considering upgrading to a tablet and the I pad is to damn expenseive. So I was thinking of getting the samsung galaxy tab. and I wonder if any trek fans have looked at it or bought it and if so what do you think of it? and are trek books aviable on it?

I'd rather have an iPad.

But, for reading, I'd prefer a Nook or Kindle. They're lighter and easier on the eyes for long periods of reading, at least in my experience.

That's pretty picky.

Anyway, if they made a netbook with a rotating screen so you could close it and have the screen facing out and also a touch screen, that would be heaven.

Apart from a touch screen, what does a tablet have that a netbook doesn't have?

  • Instant on
  • Better battery life

My netbook has been gathering dust on a shelf since buying my iPad last year. If I'm doing serious work I use my laptop because the keyboard is actually usable, if I'm mucking about, reading blogs, checking forums, I'll use the iPad. There's no room left for the netbook in my setup.

the Ipad is way to expensive for me. and, I can't afford the contract. the galaxy is a few more inches more than the nook. it all so can fit in you pants pocket just like the nook and the kindle.

No contract needed, you can just buy the wi-fi version. Doesn't need to be connected to read a book.

I personally have a Kindle 3 and love it. I also have a ipad and a samsung tab (via work). Ipad is nice but a little bulky and heavy for reading. Tab is a great form factor. As for books, it has the Kindle client so all the Amazon stuff is available.

Recently got a bluetooth keyboard/case for my ipad, so that's essentially what I've got now. And I'm loving it!

They do. Well, I guess it may not be a netbook, technically, but it's a really low powered (relatively speaking) Dell laptop/netbook running Windows 7 with a flippable touch screen for under $500.

Don't get me wrong. I've played with some ipads and they are cool but I'm still old-school and want a keyboard for some things and no tablet would ever replace my stand-alone reader.

That's why I'm loving my ASUS Transformer. It's a tablet that comes with a netbook-sized keyboard dock.

The wifi Ipad doesn't require a contract?

wifi version, no contract needed

3G + wifi version needs a contract if you want to connect via 3G but you don't have to have a contract

My netbook starts up in under thirty seconds. I'm fine with that. And I can get eleven hours out of my netbook. Again, that's pretty good.

But can it multi-task?

Pretty well, actually. Used it just yesterday to do some website coding, switching back and forth between iRepoEditor (where my code is) and Safari. It's not a perfect solution, but it's easier to carry around than my laptop :)

I have the Galaxy X and loooooove it. The kindle built into it works great and I've always gotten my books on release date.

As others have pointed out, the WiFi-Only version doesn't require a contract. And, indeed, the 3G version doesn't require a contract either—only if you want the 3G service do you need to pay for a contract. Also, any other tablet that uses 3G service will require the same contract as an iPad.

Honestly, I'm not sure why you're looking for a tablet. Or, if you are for more than just reading, what's wrong with just keeping the Nook for reading and the tablet for everything else?
