Sam Cogley

Russell Oviatt

Ensign
Red Shirt
Is there any information about the costume worn by Elijah Cook in his role as Samuel Cogley during the Court Martial episode? Description, fabric used, etc?

Cogley is wearing dark brown, flare leg dress slacks. Flares ("bell bottoms") were strongly associated with teens and hippies in 1966, so putting them on an old man was meant as futurism. He wears no-lace dress boots, which are probably just the costume Starfleet boots they had on hand.

Edit: He is definitely wearing Starfleet boots, in the Cuban heel variant:

He is wearing a brown wool or flannel houndstooth sport coat whose lapels and pockets have been covered with large pieces of tan-colored leather or Naugahyde. Under that, he has on a brown turtleneck jersey with the collar folded inward. The leather pieces and reversed neckline were doubtless meant to be futuristic as well.

Futuristic? It was my impression that Cogley was intended to look drab and outdated among the bright Starfleet uniforms and scenery. As @Herbert said, he looked like a very old book.

Good point. But then I'd say it was Future Bright vs. Future Drab.

Roddy McDowall's Bookworm costume, minus the hat, would have been good on a younger Cogley. But Desilu wasn't spending that kind of money. And in universe, neither was Cogley. He hasn't been shopping since Kodos declared martial law.

I completely forgot about the bookworm costume

He's got the second-tackiest uniform in COURT-MARTIAL, that's for certain.
I didn't think Cogley's outfit looked tacky at all. In fact, I thought it was a nice blend of futuristic and traditional. I especially like the faux-leather panels in place of lapels.

I never thought much about it. I sort of assumed his outfit was supposed to be a mix of 23rd century style and being a bit (deliberately) out of date, like a bookish professor in our day. I think it worked well.

If Cogley turns up in SNW or a Short Trek, I have a perfect candidate to play him: Eric Peterson (Oscar Leroy from Corner Gas).

And yeah, I am aware that Peterson was one of the stars of Street Legal (where he played a rather Cogley-like character), but honestly, that didn't enter into it.
