Sally Ride's obituary posthumously revealed that she was in a committed lesbian relationship for the past 30 years:

Officially, this means real-life space-traveling astronauts represent LGBT better than Star Trek has across five TV series and eleven movies.

If this was revealed posthumously and she never acknowledged it and it went on for 30 years without disclosure, then I'd say it's very much NOT representative at all.

Despite her fame, evidently Ride was a fairly private person, not just with her sexuality but with many aspects of her life. That's fine. Her life.

If you want to bring Star Trek comparisons into it, Ride's 30 years with nary a hint is no better or worse than Star Trek.
