It didn't say anything about her directing the next Star Trek movie, just that she wants to direct...in general. That's how people gain experience.

But the point that you seem to be missing is that neither she nor the article said anything about directing Star Trek, or that if she did it would happen immediately without her having the opportunity to gain experience first.
