The Beastie Boys were used in both of the latest Trek films due to their being a personal favorite of JJ Abrams. I can't fault him, though, as they're my all-time favorite music act!

I do wish they'd used the original version of "Body Movin'" for Into Darkness, rather than the Fat Boy Slim remix...

The Beasties have always been big ST fans, with numerous references throughout their catalog. They even dressed up as Kirk and Spock for their music video "Ch-Check It Out."

I heard of the connection years ago on a different forum. As to whether it was intentional, I have no idea. If it was, it's a very obscure reference. Plus, another Beastie Boys song was used in STID, so it might just be something the filmmakers like to insert and make it nuKirk's favorite classical music.

I do think it's refreshing to hear source music that's newer than jazz by Hoagy Carmichael. When Ten Forward was introduced, Ron Jones suggested that music should play and that it could be something like Jimi Hendrix, because by the 24th century it would be considered classical music. For whatever reason, Berman preferred Ten Forward being depicted as bar that's only ambient noise is an air conditioner and officers keeping their voices down. Yawn.

OK, here's my official theory on the matter after two man-years of research:

The song is obviously foreshadowing the coming sabotages of the Enterprise by Admiral Marcus, the ship of the Romulan commander, the whaling ship and federation and Klingon ships during the coming peace negotiations. It's these moments that made Kirk recall the incident and the song when writing his memoirs – thing he didn't get to do in the prime reality.

There's no other possible explanation, except perhaps aliens.
