Saber Class

Is the Sabre class the most logical design for future Federation ships? I really love the Sabre design, its extremely efficient, its a small compact ship allowing for a small shield bubble, its nacelles arnt stuck out making them prime targets and just like Dominion bug ships its probably highly maneuverable.

Anybody else love this ship design? I really hope in future Trek films or new series ;) that they show this ship in more detail and I hope starfleet starts building more of these ships along with Defiants.

It's a nice ship, although the designers don't seem to have had much confidence in it - it's 90% escape pods.

If you go by the SCE books crew levels then I think there are something like 2-3 pods per person. General impression is that the ship should be bigger than SC suggest though.

It does seem like an efficient overall design though. It has high hull capacity in a robust form.

Here's a schematic, from my LCARS library, contributed by a user in Switzerland:

For a starship with a one-hull design, I'm more impressed with Sisko's Defiant.

From the time I first saw Defiant, I wanted to see the Federation build a larger ship on the same design. Saber comes close, but it's still more like the "traditional" TREK multi-hull layout. Defiant was simpler.

Carrying generally on a theme, though, I think that there's quite a bit of potential for a new TREK series, if one ever happens, that could show us a new kind of mini-starship smaller than Janeway's Voyager. I think the stories for a starship with a crew of under 200 (maybe under 100) could allow for a different atmosphere than ships with crews over 300. Archer's Enterprise taught us that can work. I would say that such a vessel would usually be skippered by a ful Commander, no?

Nice cutaway. How canonical is that layout?

Speculative, not canonical, since there was never one shown in any Trek ep or movie. That's why Memory Alpha won't accept any of the ones I've offered them that aren't just copied from those seen already. And they already seem to have all of those covered, anyway.

I don't find the Saber-class aestheticall pleasing.

Just personal opinion.

Also don't like the Steamrunner-class very much.

My favorite classes, just for some context, are the Constitution, Miranda, Galaxy, Ambassador, Defiant, and Akira.
