So do I. Romulans are what Vulcans would be if they weren't mere puppets chained to their silly dedication to pure logic. :rommie:

As cool as it would have been to see Kirstie Alley as Saavik one last time, I'm glad she didn't turn out to be the traitor. I had no problems with Valeris, whatsoever.

^Well, I'd have preferred she been played by Alley all along just for consistency sake. (I hate recasting.) But even though Alley originated the role, Curtis played her in two movies afterward, even if the second was a cameo, so I'd have hated even more for them to switch back to Alley after that.
I seem to recall, Ms Alley. Was heavily involved with Cheers when she was asked to reprise her role as Savaak. That and she want a boat load of money to do it. Hence the part went to Ms. Curtiss instead.
Nope. Alley didn't join the cast of Cheers until 1987.

Paramount tried to low-ball Alley when they approached her agent about Search for Spock; her agent countered by asking for the same paycheck Shatner and Nimoy were getting, thinking they'd haggle and meet somewhere in the middle. Instead, Paramount decided they'd done their due diligence on trying to negotiate, and dumped her in favor of Robin Curtis. I'm pretty sure that's how it played out, anyway. I believe Therin knows a lot of the poop on this.

gods, paramount really was a pain for trek... I hope that the times have changed and the studio has finally got people in charge that don't shit on trek anymore.

^That's the story as I know it. As to whether it has changed for modern Trek, we shall see. I'd tend to think the industry works the same now as it did then.

It's amusing to me that the current poll results seem rather equally divided amongst preference for the three actresses. I'm not sure if that's actually the case for why the results are what they are, but it's certainly how it appears.

It's been how many years, I'm sure that it's been enough time for trek fans to filter into the leadership positions of paramount. It was bound to happen eventually. :techman:

I'd have put Saavik in Valeris's place, because it'd have contributed to the sense of distrust that existed even in the best of them. Saavik, after all, represented Spock's ultimate follower, and for her to betray Spock, and thus the entire Federation, would have been a better twist.

I wouldn't have minded either actress playing her, and if neither could or would not do it, I'd just have someone else (maybe even Catrall herself) play the role.

Let's hope. ;)

I don't think you'd have had to recast and go the Cattrall route anyway. I think Robin is on the record as saying she would have done it, had she been asked. Apparently, Cattrall similarly did not want to be the third actress to play Saavik (part of the reason Valeris was created to start with) so it would have been someone other than her if it was the Saavik character.

Yeah, I heard so too. But remember, Meyer didn't like that Alley was replaced for the sequel (and of course didn't like that Spock was resurrected, but anyway), thus he wasn't gonna call her.

At the very least, they could've brought Alley back. Too bad, anyway..

Understood and agreed. However, if he was willing to go along with Spock being alive again, you'd think he could get over Saavik being recast.

I've also read claims before that Cattrall was his original first-choice for Saavik, and with TUC he finally had enough control to bring her in, but then she didn't want to play Saavik... and, well you know the rest. ;)

Exactly! The only differences between vulcans and romulans are purely cultural. I wish more people would grasp this concept.

There's a definite genetic component though, even though the two races are still almost identical on a genetic level. There's enough of a difference that medical techniques for a Vulcan might not work on a Romulan (TNG "The Enemy"). Plus the rare times we've seen Romulus, it doesn't look remotely like the desert surface of Vulcan. Presumably it still has some environmental similarities for the Romulans to have settled there, but it could be enough to cause some small differences like the ridges.

As for the OT, I much prefer Valeris as a separate character. No traitor Saavik.
