Ryan Gosling & Emile Hirsch turn down "Green Lantern" role

AintItCool News and Latino Review are reporting that actors Ryan Gosling (The Notebook) and Emile Hirsch (Speed Racer) turned down the role of Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern. Apparently 37 year-old Nathan Fillion has been deemed "too old" by the studio. Sam Worthington (Marcus Wright in the upcoming Terminator Salvation) also had to reject the role due to scheduling conflicts. Anton Yelchin, the new Chekov in Star Trek and also co-starring in Salvation as Kyle Reese, is currently in consideration.

Personally, I find all those names loathsome. Gosling would have been passable but Speed Racer? Chekov? C'mon. These are kids (and I know I practically am one too...)! I imagine a thirtysomething like Fillion as Hal Jordan. A Harrison Ford as Han Solo in Star Wars type. Not these guys.

I hope Martin Campbell, who went with Daniel Craig as James Bond, rejecting the other candidates because he considered them too young, does the same here with Hal Jordan. I don't know about all of you, but I'd honestly want to see a Daniel Craig-type in the role over any of these guys.

What do you think?

Re: Ryan Gosling & Emile Hirsch turn down "Green Lantern" role

Why would Hirsch turn down something like this? Hell, why would he be OFFERED something like this?

If we're going with Star Trek, why not Chris Pine?

How about Josh Duhamel?

Re: Ryan Gosling & Emile Hirsch turn down "Green Lantern" role

I thought Martin Campbell wanted a younger Bond, but the producers overruled him and chose the older Daniel Craig.

He's a ex-military guy who works for some blue space fascists in skirts who have decided that they know what's best for the universe - rather the opposite of Han Solo I'd think...

Re: Ryan Gosling & Emile Hirsch turn down "Green Lantern" role

Fine by me. Gosling doesn't remind me of Hal Jordan and Hirsch is too short.

Why don't they just hire a guy who both can act and actually looks like the character? There must be a million of them out there.

Re: Ryan Gosling & Emile Hirsch turn down "Green Lantern" role

I could have seen Emile Hirsch playing the Kyle Rayner Green Lantern, but definitely not Hal Jordan.

Re: Ryan Gosling & Emile Hirsch turn down "Green Lantern" role

The only thing Hal Jordan "looks like" is a handsome well-built white guy with wavy brown hair. Anything beyond that depends too much on who draws him to be meaningful. Does Bruce Wayne look more like Bale or West? ;)

Ideally, for an origin story Hal would be in his early thirties at the latest. late twenties is the best deal we're likely to get.

They should talk to Chris Pine, actually.

"My name is Abin Sur. I am a member of an intergalactic police organization called the Green Lantern Corps. The ring has chosen you because of your ability to overcome great fear."

"Why are you talkin' to me, man?"

And any actor's hair can be dyed . . . .

Yep.

I just read brief reviews of a couple of versions of the script for this and it sounds like Pine would be playing a variation of the character he plays in Star Trek anyway: an aimless young guy who's bitter over the death of his father and something of an asshole, who has an opportunity to become heroic dropped on him.

And if it weren't for those space "fascists" the universe would be in more chaos then it is already! The lanterns are the police of the cosmos! But if you think police are facists, then that's fine. I just don't agree.

What a relief! Ryan Gosling doesn't fit my image of a test pilot. And he gets no additional points for being in love with an inflatable doll in a previous movie.

And Emile Hirsch? The horror, the horror. He's suitable for Liberace, not Hal Jordan.

"and i'm from Iowa":techman:

I think the reason both guys turned down the role is that they want to do more independent/serious roles like "Milk"

Re: Ryan Gosling & Emile Hirsch turn down "Green Lantern" role

Latino Review has updated saying they've heard that the producers really want Gosling for the role and are taking another crack at trying to persuade him.

Re: Ryan Gosling & Emile Hirsch turn down "Green Lantern" role

Since my first choice for Captain Kirk, Eion Bailey, was passed over in favor of that Pine kid, maybe Bailey would be right for Green Lantern. Any conventionally handsome brown-haired actor of the right age and reasonable acting skills should work, right? ;)
And any actor's hair can be dyed . . . .

But the natcherly blonde ones are going to be trying out for Captain America.

Lots and LOTS of them are dying for a role like this...doesn't mean they should be allowed to do it. The great majority of actors in Holly"weird" are not very good.

WB isn't just going to give it to an unknown anymore. The days of Chris Reeve are gone. There's to much money to be made (or lost). You give it to an actor that has some chops--and a resume that goes with it. Gosling is a nominated actor. I'm not saying he's perfect for the role either. I'm just saying you don't hand over the lead role of a 100 million dollar picture to an unknown, untested actor.

There's always been money to be made or lost in Hollywood. Even in the days of Superman, casting Reeve was thought of as a risk. The producers wanted guys like Newman and Redford, but Donner took a chance on Reeve.

Sometimes this works (Star Wars) and sometimes it doesn't (Flash Gordon).

Sometimes properties with established talent work (Downey in Iron Man) and sometimes they don't (Baldwin in Shadow).

Funny how just three years ago they gave a role he defined more so than George Reeves to a soap actor.

I say hire an unknown but cast a big name star for the villain to draw in that star's fans.

Agreed 100% :vulcan: Get a fresh faced lead and a big name star for the Villain role.

Re: Ryan Gosling & Emile Hirsch turn down "Green Lantern" role

I could see Yelchin as Kyle Rainer. Even then he's kind of small. But not Hal.
