If anything, after 400 years of traveling the world and living in different countries, it isn't implausible that MacLeod loses or softens his original accent after awhile.
His and his agent are still trying to find a franchise character for him to play.
A Nightstalkers movie with him as Hannibal King spinning out of Blade didn't happen.
His Wade Wilson aka Deadpool movie is stuck in limbo spinning out of Wolverine.
Green Lantern stalled domestically, sequel is highly, highly unlikely.
Now he's sniffing around Highlander. Surprised to not here his name in the running for the Robocop reboot actually.

You mean to say that Owen is English. British means English, Scottish or Welsh, which are all part of Great Britain.
Anyway, Owen is much too old to play McLeod. He's probably more age-appropriate for Ramirez.
Oded Fehr has long been my fanboy choice for Ramirez in a Highlander reboot. He looks Spanish, he looks Egyptian, he's got tons of charm and charisma. He pretty much is Ramirez.

Agreed. A good example of this is (assuming the rumors are true) that Benedict Cumberbatch is portraying Khan in the new Abrams Trek. He's a decent actor, but he's also a scrawny, pasty-white Brit who bears no resemblance to a genetically-enhanced Sikh.
I like Reynolds as well, but I really was hoping for a genuine Scot this time around as MacLeod, like James McAvoy, for example. I can honestly see him being Connor over Reynolds, truthfully. Ron Perlman would be my pick to play the Kurgen, though he's starting to get up there in age. Benecio Del Toro would be a decent Ramirez, IMO.
The first movie remains one of my all-time favorites, and I'm undecided at this point whether or not I'll go see a reboot. It depends on just how closely they adhere to the concepts of the first film and the series (which was great for four seasons). I'm just afraid that like so many other movies I've loved over the years, they'll both this one too in the remaking of it. We'll see.

I like your casting choices for Conor and Kurgan (how could I have omitted either of them?!); much as I like Del Toro, I would have some difficulty seeing him as Ramirez. Again, I think he's too modern or something.

As I said before, the original Highlander's WTF?/ so bad it's good casting is part of its charm. It's so out there, that you have to love it. Highlander is not a great movie but, like that other 80s movie soundtracked by Queen, Flash Gordon, it's a hugely enjoyable exercise in kitch.

I have no problem with a remake of Highlander; in fact I think that it's perfect material for a remake because of all its flaws - there's ample scope to improve on its great concept. But if you're doing it right this time, the way to do it is to cast someone who actually convinces as a Scotsman in the title role!

Urgh. Just urgh.
This is my biggest objection to trying to reboot/remake the original film. It was a product of its time, with all the various elements — in particular the WTF? casting and the Queen soundtrack — gelling together to create a cult classic. Whatever they came up with, however well-written, cast, performed, filmed, scored, etc., would almost inevitably suffer in comparison to the first film.
But if they're going to go through with this, for fuck's sake, find someone besides Ryan Reynolds to play Connor.
Reynolds is certainly no more unsuited to the role in terms of origin than Christopher Lambert, but it still strikes me as a striking example of miscasting. Perhaps their leaning more heavily on comedic moments in this version? That's the only way this casting doesn't seem like a huge mistake.

Wrong place for this debate, but still, it irks me, and I can't stop!
People should go back and watch Space Seed and think about why it's so damn creepy when you see all the pod people wake up and it looks like a Miss/Mr Universe competition. That scene alone tells you everything you need to know WHY the Federation has some weird hang-up over the Eugenics Wars - it's creepy and unnatural. Since an action-packed popcorn movie will allow approximately zero time for explanations, and 90% of the audience won't have the slightest idea what the Eugenics Wars were or why these characters or the audience should care, the message will have to be embedded in Khan himself - in how he talks, how he acts, and how he looks.
Cumberbund's fugliness/scrawniness is a worse problem than his pastiness (though even the white actors in Space Seed were sporting healthy tans, to underscore their vanity). If he struts around and acts like an evil egotist, he'll just come off as yet another generic villain - not too different from Nero.
