Spoilers Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

Obviously Doctor Who isn't "gone for good," it will be back some day. But I do think we are now in a hiatus which could last for a few years, at least. I doubt it'll be as long as the Wilderness Years were, not even if you measure the length from Survival to the TV movie, or the TV movie to Rose. But I wouldn't be too surprised if there's no new Doctor Who until 2028 or later.
Gotta say, no Who during the Trump era...not great.

This feels very like the Bond conversation doesn't it!

I am a little bit more optimistic but on the whole I think you're right, I just think maybe we could be looking at 2027. a lot depends when/if the BBC can extricate themselves from the Disney contract I guess. I wonder if The War Between the Land and the Sea will have any impact or not? It may be that however well received (or not) that is it doesn't have any bearing on the deal being extended.

I think second half of 2026 is the earliest possibility. It takes 6 months to produce a season as far as I know...and thats without scripting..so they would have to start by january 2026...and so far there is no indication that they might make up their minds until then.

It wouldn't surprise me if RTD hasn't already written a few scripts! The bigger issue might be casting.

It's not impossible that some work is going on behind the scenes and on the QT

Truth is, I was debating whether or not I should say 2027 or 2028 in my post, I just went with 28 as I am a glass is half empty sort of person.

At the very least, I am certain there won't be any Doctor Who in 2026, as I suspect that's why The War Between Land and Sea got postponed. If we don't hear any news at all about Doctor Who's future by the end of 26, I'd begin to worry that we might be in for a long haul hiatus.

I'm just going to treat TWBTLATS as 5 Doctor-lite episodes, and assume that 2027 will see a special, at least. That way, we've not missed out anything much, apart from the main character.

They've just Hartnelled him/her off for a bit.

Christmas 26 at the absolute earliest.
And even then, I reckon we’d be looking at a Spearhead style filming set up. No Tardis interiors, possibly no studio filming at all, to save a few bob.

I have a hard time imagining that the reaction to a spinoff would change Disney's decision about the main show. I also have a hard time imagining that the spinoff will do well regardless of how good it is. There's been so much time and so little promotion that only hardcore fans will make the effort to watch it, much less know what it even is!

But we'll see. Apparently RTD wrote it before any of the Ncuti content and pitched it first for the Whoniverse.

I'm pretty sure RTD is on record as saying he's written a bunch of season 3 even though it wasn't greenlit. Now, that was for Ncuti of course, but adapting those existing scripts for a new Doctor should be easier than starting from scratch.

I'd say that absolute earliest it could return would be 2nd half of 2027, but sometime in 2028 as the earliest is more likely.

Note: That's not including a possible one off special featuring Piper and whatever she is. They could shoehorn that in earlier 2027 or even Christmas 2026 if they pushed it.

A Christmas special in 2027 is eminently possible. Hell a Christmas special in 2026 isn't impossible.

Not filming in a studio at all would actually cost more money.

Not sure that’s true. I would be very surprised if it was. Granted, BBC Studios owns studios, it’s in the name, but studio shooting is surely by its nature more expensive than location.
The Sun is free, after all. Even if you’re topping it up and bouncing it.

I’m not saying it’s time to start shooting the show on iPhones to save renting a camera off Sony, but hey, it’s not the worst idea ;)

Yeah, filming on location is way, way more expensive than filming at a studio. That's why all the cheapest shows are only filmed in the studios, and one of the biggest cost cutting measures for things like the Star Treks is to do "bottle shows" which are episodes filmed entire in the studio, with as few guest stars as possible.

Are you being serious right now? Studio filming being significantly cheaper than location shooting is one of the most basic filmmaking 101 rules.

I’m basing it on Who past, and things like Sarah Connor Chronicles, the cost of sets etc. (the Sun bit is a joke though xD)

If you own a studio (and the Beeb must still have some…) then you can save money by going studio only, rather than a mix.

I suppose I haven’t taken into account the shift in how location filming is done these days versus the old days, and the more usual approach versus indie film making and some of the styles that were popular twenty years ago. XD

(Catering? There’s the cafe and pub.. Loos? There’s the cafe and pub. Transport? There’s the train station, and if you”re lucky we’ll share a minicab…)

;)

The Power of the Doctor , while not technically a better story than The Reality War, would have been a better stop before a hiatus, yes.

TPotD definitely would have been a better stopping point. It also felt like an anniversary special, a year early.

Both aren't the greatest stories, but by comparison, TPotD was definitely told better, had more interesting ideas by comparison, and - most importantly - characters felt truer to themselves.

Also, what B&W story is next to be stripped down, given a new music score, and colorized? Those used to be all the rage...
