I just hope this is something that plays out over this era, and he's not gearing up for "Moffat 2" after Russell leaves; I don't think I can sit through that man's showrunning again.

I'm unaware of any "controversy" surrounding Empress of Mars and and a quick Google search on the matter only reveals fans bitching about continuity.

Regardless, Chibnall was publicly announced as Moffat's successor a little over four months before Empress of Mars even aired. So unless this controversy you speak of occurred during production, then there is absolutely no way Empress of Mars could have any impact either way on whether or not Gatiss would become showrunner.

Though to be honest, I seem to remember Gatiss saying as early as 2015 that he had no interest in someday being Doctor Who showrunner anyway, though don't hold me to that.

He just felt like he was heading that way, and even seems a natural choice — especially considering his experience on Sherlock and League is more in line with the requirements of Who than Broadchurch ever was. Maybe he may be more pro it these days. I don’t even have a particular taste for Hinchcliffe and ‘gothic’ Who, but think he would probably be a good choice, should he choose it and should it choose him.

The controversy was over one of the Victorian Soldiers being a black guy, with all sorts of ‘this isn’t accurate’ or ‘they wouldn’t have had him’ or ‘he wouldn’t associate himself with that, colonialism bad!’ depending on what flavour of keyboard warrior was involved. It was all a hiding to nothing, I think Gatiss even pulled up some historical parallels, and it went away — but I can see it being the kind of thing that would blot his copy book with some at the Beeb. Even as early as during production.

As I recall, there used to be a bunch of people who wanted Toby Whithouse to be showrunner. Even rumors that he'd been offered it but turned it down.

I've heard that before. I love his episodes but I don't blame him for not wanting to showrun. He's probably seen how much it effected Davies, Moffat, and Chibnall.

IIRC, Toby Whithouse was offered "acting showrunner" for a year after Moffat left in order to keep the show active while BBC selected a new permanent showrunner. When he refused, Moffat was persuaded to stay on for what became his sixth season, Capaldi's third.

I believe Whithouse's stated reason for refusing was that he wasn't interested in being showrunner of a show he hadn't created.

I would love to see James Goss involved with the show. Like you said, writing and producing audio dramas aren't inherently transferable skills to television, but I would nonetheless love to see him at least write for the show snd maybe eventually lead to showrunning.

That's all assuming Goss is even interested in showrunning, or even writing for television.

I looked him up on Wikipedia and Goss does have some experience with the online animated Who series, and produced special features for some of the DVDs, not sure how that would transfer over to showrunning TV Who, but it seems to me it's at least closer to that than the audio dramas are.

It's not like this is new, luckily there wasn't an internet when Hale and Pace were in Survival, and while he had been an actor for a long time, I guess people would have been sniffy when Nicholas Parsons was cast in Fenric because he was primarily known as a gameshow host back then.

Isn't Badley Walsh also a game-show host? To be precise the Host from "The Chase"? I thought, he was quite good. And is Rylan GBs equivalent of Menderes Bağcı, who constantly showed up in Germanys version of "Country XYZ has talent", called "Deutschland sucht den Superstar"?

Yeah, Bradley Walsh would've been a better example for me to use, but the point remains the same: I'm sure Rylan in Doctor Who won't be some great calamity and may actually be a good, maybe even great, addition to the show.

People were sniffy. And it worked out. Especially in Parsons case.
But as with Tate, there was some acting experience (and Tate in Runaway Bride is very different to Tate in the show proper — and I still wouldn’t put her top of the acting power list for NuWho companions) rather than ‘sleb personality fame.

But we had the internet when Billie Piper was announced...
